Today we’d like to introduce you to Ingrid Butterer
Hi Ingrid, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up around people making things not buying things. People who felt art was an important part of intellectual development; a well rounded education. People who are experienced in craft. As a young person, I preferred the company of musicians, actors, dancers and visual artists. The arts suited me. It was a natural progression leading me to art school. Later, into art education and the study of human development which informs my work today. There is an internal shift that occurs when one is able to articulate, visualize or make concrete experiences in the world through a physical material and later, reflect on it as an image, act or object. I fell in love with that process and the people I have met through it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
To my experience, art making or the journey to becoming a recognized artist is a long game. Struggle plays a part. Either you are struggling with your own work; struggling with time, money, personal life, opportunities or comparing your work or career with other artists. It’s a challenging process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a multidisciplinary artist. My work spans ceramic sculpture, video/performance, drawing and painting encompassed by the over arching theme of Everyday is Mother’s Day Project. Through the project I address personal experiences of motherhood in the midst of domestic violence and it’s aftermath. It is not an easy subject to represent or to receive as a viewer. That is what I am primarily known for. I am proud of facing my experience with violence directly through my work. Sharing evidence of violence against anyone is essential to examining what it means to be human in a human world.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
People who know me or my work understand I embrace directness and transparency. Currently, I am questioning transparency. Not as it relates to my work but how it plays out in my daily life.
