Today we’d like to introduce you to Wandy Cheng
Hi Wandy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I studied Illustration in an art and design University. Through a portfolio development program with an arts organization in my first year of undergrad, I was introduced to the world of murals and public art. Since then, I’ve worked to translate conceptual ideas into vibrant visuals to communicate the client’s and collaborators’ goals through my evolving visual style. Upon finishing my degree in Bachelors of Design, I’ve integrated art-based workshops into my public art practice to bring impactful installations to life with an intergenerational audience. My work can be seen all over Toronto on businesses’ entrances, hidden in laneways, as well as on traffic signal boxes and cycling barriers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think it continues to be tough to consistently advocate for myself and my work. I’m learning healthier ways to not let rejection affect my confidence and faith in my ability, especially when I’ve made my art my career, it’s tough to balance the two at times.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an illustrator from Hong Kong currently working in Toronto, Canada whose work is expressed through illustration, ceramics, and paper-cut. Inspired by memories of lived experiences, architectures, and environments, I strive to delight customers with my whimsical illustrated homewares and original artworks. With a BDes in Illustration from Ontario College of Art and Design University, I help businesses create a memorable presence in their communities by translating conceptual ideas into impactful public art. I have extensive experience coordinating and facilitating collaborative workshops to bring meaningful installations to life with an intergenerational audience.
I am most proud of a recent commission completed in October 2023, wrapping around the entrance of a co-op food store’s entrance with a 52 feet wide and 14 feet high mural! As an immigrant who was uprooted from Hong Kong when I was 10, I feel strongly about my identity as a Hongkonger and cites the city as a source of inspiration for many of my creative expressions.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Artists continue to work really hard at their craft to build up their careers through the tough economy. Word of encouragement, connection and support mean more to them than you’d understand!
