Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Knight. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Crystal, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Starting Salon Inks Hair and Makeup Studio began with a vision I had while working as a stylist and building my own client base. I loved doing hair, but I started realizing I wanted more control over the environment my clients experienced. I wanted a space that reflected my standards for hair care, beauty, and professionalism. That’s when the idea of opening my own salon started to take shape.
The first step after having the idea was doing a lot of research and planning. I looked into what it would take to legally start a business, registering the name, setting up the business structure, getting a tax ID, and opening a business bank account. I also started thinking about where the salon should be located and what kind of space would make sense financially.
Next came finding the right location. I toured several spaces until I found one in Richardson that felt right and was convenient for my clients. Once I signed the lease, the idea suddenly became real, and I had to quickly move into execution mode.
The next few weeks were spent turning the space into a salon, purchasing styling chairs, mirrors, shampoo equipment, and setting up the layout. At the same time, I set up the business side of things like booking software, service pricing, and payment systems. I also started promoting the salon and letting my existing clients know about the new location.
In the beginning, I was doing everything, serving clients, running the business, marketing, and learning as I went. Over time, the salon grew through referrals and repeat clients. What started as an idea of having my own space eventually grew into building a brand and a business that continues to expand today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Crystal Knight, and I’m the owner of Salon Inks Hair and Makeup Studio in Richardson, Texas. I’ve always had a passion for beauty, creativity, and helping women feel confident. What started as a love for doing hair and makeup eventually turned into a career and the opportunity to build my own salon brand.
I entered the beauty industry because I truly enjoy helping people look and feel their best. Over time, I built a loyal client base and wanted to create a space where clients could receive high-quality services in a professional and welcoming environment that focuses on both style and healthy hair care. That vision led me to open Salon Inks.
At Salon Inks, we specialize in hair care, hair coloring, precision haircuts, styling, and professional makeup services. We also provide beauty services for special events, such as weddings, photo shoots, and other occasions, helping clients feel polished and confident for important moments in their lives.
One of the biggest problems is finding a stylist they can trust who understands their hair and listens to their needs. We focus heavily on consultation and education, so clients not only leave looking great but also know how to care for their hair between visits.
What sets Salon Inks apart is the personalized experience and focus on quality service. Every client is treated with care, and we take the time to understand their hair goals and lifestyle so we can deliver results that truly work for them.
One of the things I’m most proud of is that the salon has grown largely through relationships and word-of-mouth referrals, which shows the trust our clients have in our work. My goal is to continue building a brand that focuses on great service, healthy hair, and helping clients feel confident every time they walk out of the salon.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Here’s are several resources that have shaped the way I think about business, leadership, and entrepreneurship. As a salon owner, I’ve found that running a successful business requires much more than technical skill; it also requires strong systems, mindset, and leadership.
One book that had a major impact on my entrepreneurial thinking is The E‑Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber. It talks about the difference between being a technician who works in the business and becoming an entrepreneur who builds systems so the business can grow beyond just one person. That concept really resonated with me as a salon owner because many stylists are trained in their craft but not necessarily in building scalable businesses.
Another influential book is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It focuses on mindset, discipline, and persistence that are essential for entrepreneurship. The book emphasizes the importance of having a clear vision and staying committed even when challenges arise.
I’ve also found inspiration from Daymond John, especially through his book The Power of Broke. His philosophy about starting with limited resources and using creativity and hustle to build something meaningful really speaks to many entrepreneurs who start small and grow their businesses over time.
In addition to books, I often learn through podcasts, interviews, and business conversations with other entrepreneurs. Hearing real stories about how people built their brands, handled challenges, and scaled their companies helps me continue to evolve as both a salon owner and a leader.
Overall, the biggest lesson these resources reinforced for me is that entrepreneurship is about vision, consistency, and building systems that allow your business to grow beyond you. Those ideas continue to influence how I manage and expand Salon Inks today.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
One thing that really helped me build my reputation was my overall appearance, especially my hair and how I present myself through my style.
I’ve always believed that as a stylist, you are your first advertisement. Not only did I make sure my hair was always healthy, styled, and a reflection of my work, but I also made a point to look like a professional in the industry through the way I dressed. My clothing, overall grooming, and presence all aligned with the image of a knowledgeable, polished hairstylist.
When clients walk in and see you, they’re instantly forming an opinion. So I was very intentional about showing up in a way that said, I take my craft seriously, and I know what I’m doing. That visual confidence helped build trust before I even touched a client’s hair.
Along with that, consistency in my work, professionalism, and genuinely caring for my clients kept them coming back. But that first impression, looking the part and representing my brand well every day, played a big role in establishing my reputation and setting the tone for the Salon Inks experience.
