Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eki Asemota. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eki, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents truly did everything right.
They showed me what real love looks like, not just in words, but in action. I grew up watching a true partnership, both in marriage and in business. They built together, supported each other, and stayed aligned through everything. That example shaped how I view relationships, leadership, and collaboration in my own life.
They also gave me a deep sense of culture. Coming from both Nigerian and Dominican backgrounds, I was able to experience the richness of both. As a child, I lived in Nigeria, where I learned respect, tradition, and the importance of unity. That foundation continues to guide how I move, how I lead, and how I show up in my work.
Community was always at the center of our lives. My parents ran a successful business for over 20 years, and I watched how they treated people, how they built trust, and how they created something that extended beyond just making money. It was about impact, relationships, and legacy.
They also poured into me through conversation, values, and spirituality. There was always a strong sense of faith, discipline, and purpose in our home.
I truly am who I am because of them.
The way I lead, create, and build today is a direct reflection of what they showed me growing up.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the world of performing arts and fashion at a very young age. I was inspired by my parents, who owned a successful cultural shop in New York City. I grew up surrounded by fabrics, culture, and creativity. At the same time, I was taking dance classes in school, performing in shows with intricate costumes that always fascinated me. That combination of culture, movement, and fashion naturally became a part of who I am.
Over time, that passion turned into purpose.
Today, I teach dance classes, curate unique and joyful fashion shows, and lead a nonprofit organization called Your Queens Inc. Through Your Queens, we educate communities about African royalty using storytelling, song, and dance. We bring history to life in a way that is engaging, empowering, and unforgettable.
At the core of everything I do is healing and empowerment. We help people of all ages build self-esteem, confidence, and a deeper connection to culture and identity. Whether it is through a performance, a class, or an event, our goal is for people to feel uplifted.
What sets us apart is that we were the first registered organization to bring African kings and queens to life through performance in this way. For over 11 years, we have continued to grow, impact communities, and stay true to our mission. I am especially proud that we are now expanding that vision with plans to build the Your Queens Center for Housing and Arts in Southeast Rocky Mount, North Carolina. This space will combine culture, creativity, and community in a way that creates lasting impact.
What I want people to know is simple: when you experience my work, you will feel something. You will feel seen, heard, valued, respected, and most importantly, you will feel joy.
That is the heart of everything I create.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
For me, it comes down to being transparent, kind, consistent, and respectful.
I believe in being clear with my team so everyone understands the vision and their role. I lead with kindness and treat people with respect, never talking down to them, because people do their best when they feel valued.
Consistency builds trust, and flexibility shows understanding when life happens.
I also make sure my team has the ability to give input and lead. When people feel heard and empowered, they take ownership and show up stronger.
And honestly, something simple but important… pay people on time. That builds trust.
At the end of the day, when people feel respected, included, and appreciated, morale stays high.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency has been everything for us.
I have a model that whether we are performing for an audience of one or thousands, we show up the same way every time. That level of consistency builds trust and credibility over time.
I also truly know our brand and we do not waver. Our mission has always been clear, to heal, build self-esteem, and spread love through performing arts and fashion. Everything we do aligns with that purpose.
And beyond the work, our energy matters. We lead with pure, genuine energy, and people feel that. It creates real connection.
That combination of consistency, clarity, and authenticity is what has helped us build our reputation.
