Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katherine Angel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Katherine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
So before we were Kat’s Delights, we had a different name. Let’s start from the very beginning! I started this idea of baking and selling my cakes back in 2021. During Covid in 2020, I would make my infamous Carrot Cake for my dad all the time since we really had nothing else to do. I perfected my recipe from making it so much unintentionally and with zero idea of making this into anything let alone a business. Fast forward to January 2021, I made my best friend a cake for her birthday. She’s not a cake person but will devour my carrot cake. I “decorated”, added some cute little baby’s breath and dropped it off. I remember being so proud and excited because I thought it came out so good and cute. Her and her husband convinced me into trying to sell it. From there sparked the idea of the cake business. It originally started with the “semi-naked” decoration style because quite honestly, I had no idea how to decorate a cake or what consisted of it etc. I started brain storming name ideas for the business and ultimately decided on “For Love & Sweets”. I began slowly advertising on instagram and talking about it with people. I didn’t really know what I wanted to come from this idea. At the time it seemed like just a cool and fun thing to do on the side of my 9-5 job. It was really hard and I definitely went through many many trial and errors with my recipes, management and communication with people. All new things that any new business owner will come across in some way. I told myself I’d get if it a year and see what happens. It was hard to grow on social media. I wasn’t great on the marketing side and frankly felt a little discouraged to continue. I booked a few weddings which were also a huge learning curve.
Then fast forward to a year later, November 2022. I did my final wedding and decided to take a break. Mentally, I wasn’t feeling it anymore. I wasn’t sure what i wanted to do with it. The extra income was nice but I truly feel that if your heart and energy isn’t right, your baking will feel that. So I wanted to take some time to really think about what it is that I wanted and IF this was even something I wanted to continue. I took as few months off and in early 2023, I decided to start again but this time do it differently and how I should’ve started to begin with.
I decided to rebrand and change the name, organize myself better, find a niche that I liked and aligned with me and what I enjoyed doing, came up with a plan of what I wanted to offer, pricing breakdown, social media etc. I’m really fortunate to have supportive friends and family who helped me with this rebrand. I had a mini launch brunch to announce my relaunch. I was so excited to come back and really make something out of this. 2023 was amazing for my growth in less than a year. I was busy every single weekend with orders smiling from ear to ear.
I let go of the fear of charging too much, not trusting my creative side, caring what people think, instagram following not going up as fast as I’d like, comparing my success to others. I’ve learned to use my social media to create a wonderful community with awesome people. A lot of my clients have become friends and recurring customers. My perspective completely changed when I decided to come back and I think that was one of the biggest and best things I could have done. I’m not perfect and still make mistakes and can only continue to learn from them and move forward. My goal is to take Kat’s Delights full time and keep growing!

Katherine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Kat, born and raised in Miami, FL. I’m 31 years old and come from a Colombian background. I currently work two jobs, my 9-5 as an HR Generalist/Executive Assistant to the CEO and as business owner, baker and everything in between at Kat’s Delights.
I started Kat’s Delights from an idea of making Carrot Cake in 2020. We specialize in custom cakes, vintage/lambeth style cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops. I love having creative freedom to bring my client’s visions to life and make beautiful and fun designs!
I would say my communication and attentiveness sets me apart from others. I really strive to answer as quickly and efficiently as I can to provide the best service possible to each and every person.
My mission is to have each person love my work inside and out to make them want to come back and order again! I pour a lot of heart and love into each cake. I will never do any thing that I don’t feel strongly about and/or out of my level of expertise just for the money,

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a brand from scratch on social media is hard these days. I’ve grown a lot in the last year and still continuing to push that growth. A few things I feel that really helped me is posting consistently, good quality content whether that be photos or videos or both, reels and paid ads!
I sometimes get asked how I’ve been able to grow and gain clients and an audience and I always say to keep posting no matter the number of likes or views. It’s discouraging of course, but the more you do it, the more people WILL see it.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For me, I would say word of mouth! When people post and tag my work, it helps so much!!! Honestly, that’s helped a lot this last year. It’s amazing what a tagged story or post will get you.
