One piece of advice I give to almost every patient or client is about how to approach wellness with balance. We’ve come to a place in the wellness industry where excessive, restrictive, and rigid protocols are really getting a lot of attention while missing the whole picture of the patient. It’s important to first determine your goals – what are they? how do you want to feel? who do you want to be? The best advice I routinely give professional athletes when it comes to their performance training or rehab for an injury is to find your small wins. In professional sports, so much of the player’s identity is wrapped up in their ability to compete at a high level, but when enduring a rehab or going through offseason training, some of that identity is lost because they are not competing in games. One piece of advice that really stood out involved a client who was struggling with self-worth and constantly felt they weren’t doing enough. They were a high achiever but couldn’t shake the feeling that their efforts were never good enough. I suggested a shift in perspective: instead of measuring their worth by accomplishments and external validation, they focus on acknowledging and celebrating their intrinsic value and growth.
