We often hear about bad bosses, but we think it’s important to talk about the good ones because we hope that by giving folks examples of how to be a good boss we can inspire future bosses to be better, to do better for their employees and all stakeholders.

My mentor has been the pivotal defining voice behind a good majority of my most intimate “aha” life moments. Many of our sessions we sat in silence for some time as I was learning to sit in the question presented to me until I was present, without thought and aware of my soul’s truth. This reflection and quiet has simplified some really chaotic moments as it gave me time to wipe away my story and see what is. This is something important to me as I carry it in to my practice and ask questions For their own self reflection. Read more>>

Chris Stewart, my former Department Chair at Tyler Junior College It is sentimentalized in books and movies all the time, the impact another person, especially a teacher, can have on one’s life. I am sure if we all paused for a moment to think there would be a short list of human beings, other than family members, who have helped shape the people we are today, hopefully for the better. This applies directly to my daily life and the reassurance and freedom I have been given to do my job, my way, and with the confidence of knowing someone believed in me and supported my decisions even when he didn’t agree with them. Oh my have I had an amazing Boss. I think what made him a great boss, was that, while sometimes he had to delegate projects, he allowed us to gravitate and take ownership of projects that we were interested in. Allowing us to take the time, to dive deep into our projects, taking ownership, finding the flaws, finding the better processes, gave us the opportunity to become that subject matter expert and allowed me to be able to. I work for the legendary electromineralist digital visionary artist Android Jones. For several years I have been his “Pirate Droid” in charge of shipping, printing, vending, etc. This has by far been the most rewarding, exciting, and inspirational job I have ever had. I take care of his online orders, which usually entails fine art printing, packaging merchandise and shipping them, customer service, and selling merch at in-person events as well as being of help wherever else it is called for, which enables me to control my own schedule depending on what is needed. The flexibility of my work schedule enables me to pursue other passions in my free time such as regularly attending art and music events around the Denver/Boulder area and enjoying outdoor activities. I was a development girl in Hollywood, meaning I found and developed film and tv projects for producers and studios. I worked for Julia Roberts during 9/11, at her production company right near her apartment. I saw the buildings burning from my office window. Tim Robbins had a deal with us and we ran from the loft. I went to my boss’ apartment, one of the VPs of our company who happened to be Adam Horovitz from the Beastie Boys’ sister. We told Julia’s driver to buy an Escalade and fill it with supplies and get Julia out of Manhattan. We walked 85 blocks up to our company president’s apartment on Central Park West. Read more>>

When I was an intern just starting out, I felt like I had good instincts but needed a lot of reassurance since the magnitude of the job was so great and I took my responsibility as a therapist so seriously. I had an incredible supervisor by the name of Anat Cohen PhD. Overall, she was just outstanding at her job but what was most impactful to me was the way she responded one day after I was reviewing a case with her. Her exact words to me were the following – “I don’t know what you’re doing but you’re clearly doing deep work so keep doing exactly what you’re doing.” It was just what I needed to hear to grow my confidence as a therapist. The best boss I ever had was a man named Joe Aldrich. I had just come out of a previous set of job environments that had left me rattled and susceptible to fear of constant failure and inability to perform well. Being hired by the new company and working under Joe was a mind opening experience. He was the wind in my sails. Every new thing I learned he encouraged me and raises were a regular occurrence as compared with a lot of companies today that just do a cost of living increase which barely covers the increase in healthcare coverage much less anything else. If I made a mistake, he showed me how easy it was to fix it and not to worry about it. The atmosphere at that company was so encouraging and easy going it was like working from home. Read more>>

I’m currently working at my own shop in Las Vegas, and I’ve also had experiences in Korea and LA. The owner of the space in Las Vegas is the best. Right from the beginning, she accepted the conditions that allowed me to join the location, always prioritizing my well-being over her own interests. Personally, I don’t usually like a company with a family-like atmosphere, but the owner has created just that, so I happily work my hours and then go home. This approach aligns well with my work style and allows me to get along without any trouble. Read more>>
