Do you have a manager, agent or representative who helps you sign or close deals? Why or why not? If you do have one, how did you find them and how did you know they were the right one for you? It was summer 2021 when I signed with Jen Nadol, a wonderful agent in upstate New York. In the six months prior to getting Jen’s phone call, I’d sent out hundreds of queries. I’d received responses ranging from “send me the manuscript” to “who are you again and why should I care?” Sending those queries and waiting on the other side of the computer for responses was like speed dating all day everyday. I got a few numbers, I got a few looks up and down, but it was constant uncertainty. When Jen wrote that she was interested, I was cautious. I sent her the full manuscript for my book Blood Orange Night and she called within a few days. The book blew her away, she said and offered me representation on the spot. And once I talked with her, I realized I’d found my dream agent. She was generous, persistent, professional and most importantly, she adored the book. My speed dating of agents was finally over. It’s been like a rollercoaster ride. I signed with my first Agent in the UK 5 years ago, I got my first job booked and it was a part of a BBC show called Line of Duty, I was over the moon to have my first TV credit! The Agency wasn’t that big and I wanted to see If I had a chance at one of the top agencies in the country. I got accepted and I got into really good shows but after two years (apparently because of Covid) the Agency dropped off lots of people and I was one of them. I was devastated and very upset. I do believe that “it can break you or make you”, so I decided that it would make me:) I approached Agencies in the UK and the USA. And guess what? I got accepted to one of the best Agencies in the USA and the UK. I became very close with my agent and I’m so happy I got dropped off from the previous agency! Read more>>
