We were lucky to catch up with Zerena Volcy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zerena, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My hero would have to be a combination of two amazing women: my mother and grandmother. The lessons I have gained from them include pride in self and family. Doing the very best you can do and taking pride in your work first will become an acceptance by others. If you don’t believe in your work, who will? I remember my Abuela would make me clean beans, pick every perfect-looking bean, and discard the ugly ones; the outcome would become a great meal. This childhood lesson might have started my niche to my attention to detail quality. To highlight my mother’s life lesson would be to take pride in who I am and where I come from. Without her example, I wouldn’t have been able to develop a thick skin. Watching her take on life when I was younger made me adapt at a very young age.
For folks who may not have read about you before, can you please tell our readers about yourself, how you got into your industry / business / discipline / craft etc, what type of products/services/creative works you provide, what problems you solve for your clients and/or what you think sets you apart from others. What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.
My name is Zerena Volcy, and I am a proud Latina entrepreneur, a wife and a new mom. So, you can only imagine the wild ride it has been thus far. Because of this, I can take things into my own hands and always have a unique vision for myself and my family. I got into the event décor industry about a year ago when I realized I had a talent for specific attention to detail partly because of my interior design and artistic course background. I knew that the corporate world wasn’t for me in many ways because it did not fit with my creativity, and I asked myself what I truly have a passion for so that I could follow through with that and not dread a 9 to 5 job.
I decided to create and start the business I have always dreamt of. My artistic vision and gift for details found a place to call home as I can express myself and provide a unique service at the same time.
I have a passion for décor, including the variety of colors and textures and especially the attention to detail which is my favorite part. I get to add my touch style.
The type of products my business provides deals with intimate gathering experiences. We like to cater to that smaller crowd. Many tend to think “who would. It’s just a few of us”. Any occasion, no matter how big or small deserves my utmost dedication and creative touch. We also provide unique balloon décor designs. We talk to our clients about what theme or the things they are looking for and we exaggerate the production.
The problem we solve for our clients is the sense of relief from the worries of hosting and providing a certain touch to their event. We like to make things easy for our customers when it comes to visuals and details. We come in, set up, and disappear like we were never there. Sounds like a magic trick I know, but we have that reputation and our creative behind-the-scenes touch speaks for itself.
What sets us apart from others is our uniqueness in creation, our reputation with our clients, and our execution in production.
The thing that I am most proud of is being a Latina-owned small business. It means so much to this dreamer because of my cultural roots and all that it entails.
What I would want others to think of my business is the passion, dedication, and heart that goes on behind the scenes and what truly happens to execute my clients’ grand experiences. We are definitely family oriented, so we like to take care of our clients like a family of our own. They will never have a letdown with us because of this special detail that sets us apart.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing clients’ and their guests’ faces with the finished product. Elevating their vision and bringing it to life is very rewarding to me. I was able to execute and deliver what they wanted while enjoying the creative process. Being able to create those moments and experiences for my clients is worth more than anything to me.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Sometimes it can be difficult for others to see your vision. Some people are more creative than others. For me, although this field keeps me on my toes with last- minute mishaps, it’s my creativity that fuels my passion to find a solution. To those who have artistic gifts, I encourage them to make a living from them. When I ask people what they are passionate about, whatever their answer is, that’s the field they should pursue. I know people think this is a hobby of mine and I will admit, it was a hobby until I made it a full-time job which I don’t regret. Life is too short to not pursue your dreams.
