We recently connected with Zen Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Zen , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I remember the exact date that I decided I would never work for anyone else again. I had just graduated massage school and was at my 1st job, a chiropractor’s office. The year was 1996 and I was making $20 an hour. Excellent pay back then. I happen to be standing at the front desk one day and noticed the billing rate was $120. The office was making $100 I was doing all the work. It was at that moment I decided to become an entrepreneur. I have never looked back.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What makes me unique is that the signature services that I offer for massage (YoMa®️), Skin care (Zen Facelift®️) and Pilates are ones that I have developed myself after decades of working in the field. I teach these effective and unique techniques around the country. I love sharing my experience on how to work smarter
Have you ever had to pivot?
There have been multiple pivot points during my career As a body worker for 25 years. Events such as bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, pregnancy, and two broken feet all forced me to find new ways to use my body to continue working. It’s was a challenge but I’m a better therapist today for growing during those uncomfortable points.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I just moved to Jacksonville after having a practice for 25 years in Seattle. It’s definitely been interesting growing my business again from scratch. Ultimately the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is the same regardless of where I am. 1.I give my client 100% of my energy and attention while they are in my space. 2. I create a comfortable and safe environment for them to relax in,
3. I elicit all the senses.
4. I make sure they listen to what they want and need. 5. When they leave they are satisfied and tell their friends.
6. I wear a uniform that has my name and titles so everywhere I go, people know what I do.
