Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Young String Mentors. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Young String, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Young String Mentors (YSM) was originally founded to spread the gift of music to children who may not have access to such resources. Therefore, we began our recorder donation initiative where YSM donates recorders and hand-made recorder curriculum to Title 1 elementary schools in the DFW area. Our goal is to bring the joy of music to as many kids as we can. We believe that music is crucial, as it serves a key role in child development from boosting confidence to improving literacy skills.

Young String, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are a group of students who have been active string musicians ranging from 5-10 years. As we increased our musical knowledge, we wanted to use it to benefit those in our community. Through our knowledge and experience, we hope to inspire kids to live out their musical interests as well. Realizing the impact that music has had on us, YSM was founded to share this life-changing experience with other children.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As musicians, we feel that music allowed us to express ourselves in numerous ways. We find it fulfilling to see ourselves grow from beginners to proficient, competitive musicians. Regardless of level, seeing the joy on the audiences’ faces makes all of our hard work worth it.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
We believe that music education funding is extremely important and there should be more priority given to it, as it has endless child development benefits. The first step in accomplishing this is to break the stigma that music education is a waste of funds and time. Music not only boosts confidence and improves literacy skills but also provides children an escape from personal hardships.
