We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yee Lim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yee, thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I would have never imagined myself being a full-time newborn and family photographer; AKA ‘baby whisperer’!
My journey began when I was very young, around 12 years old. I carried a Kodak film camera everywhere I went, and took pictures of anything and everything. My first job working as a newborn photographer was in the hospital; I didn’t become an independent contractor until 6 years later after working for 2 different companies.
In the beginning of 2022, I started Yee Lim Photography. After gaining experience working with over 400 newborn babies, I carried over my skills into my own practice. I now work with families to create beautiful memories in the comfort of their own homes. I prefer to travel to my clients’ homes because it just makes the process much more convenience and comfortable for both the child and parents.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
When I was a child, my photography skills were… minimal. I didn’t know what I was doing back then, some pictures would come out blurry, others would come out cropped weird. Thankfully, I’ve learned a lot since then, thanks to the people I’ve met and experiences I’ve had. Now, I’m able to offer my clients high-quality photography that captures important, precious moments in their lives.
My brand is all about the trust and client’s experience. I believe connection and conversation make a great portrait session. Trust between the photographer and client is important when working with young children and newborn babies. Having a ‘stranger’ handle your precious baby is nerve wracking and vulnerable, so to connect and build trust with each and every one of my clients is very important to me. I am committed to make the photoshoot experience as comfortable and smooth as possible for both the child and the family.
I offer a multitude of portrait services, but I focus on two main genres; newborn, and children and family portrait. While I mainly photograph newborn babies, I also offer maternity and family portrait photography, in which the family is the subject. Both are just as rewarding!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’ve always been a perfectionist, so if I could give any advice to my younger self, I’d tell her to embrace the beauty in the imperfection. To this day, I put a lot of pressure on myself to never, EVER, make errors in my work, but I’ve come to realize that mistakes and failures are okay. Mistakes and failures along my journey pushed me and my business to become better!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At Yee Lim Photography, my goal is to always create memorable, fun, and comfortable portrait sessions. My mission is to deliver beautiful, personalized wall art that families can treasure for many years to come. My hope is that with every photo that I captured for my clients, the photos bring back their photo shoot experience with fondness and love.
