Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yasma Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Yasma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well, it started as a hobby initially, but then I became very passionate about it. I have always loved candles, and my husband noticed I was always reading and trying to make my candles, so he bought me a candle-making kit for Christmas in 2016. I loved what I created and started making candles as gifts for friends and family. I wasn’t pleased with the quality of the candles and started researching and testing different formulas, methods, and processes. I experienced a lot of frustration during that time, and I can’t tell you how many times I just wanted to quit (lol). I reached out to my mom, who is my strength, my rock, and she will always be direct with no sugar coating. She told me I would NOT be quitting and giving up on something I’ve worked so hard on. She reminded me of my “Why,” two beautiful daughters, and that she would always support me in anything I did or would ever do. It was what I needed to hear at that time. That motivated me to create the formula everyone knows today as “Y’s candles.”

Yasma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I make and sell 100% wax candles, and wax melts. I wanted to create not only an all-natural product but one that performs to the max. I’m a candle lover, and there’s nothing worse than purchasing a candle that you cannot smell. I wanted my candles to be known as one of the BEST! Early on, I experienced a lot of challenges with perfecting the formula, and it was tough to take natural products and make them perform at the highest level.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn not to depend on family and friends only to help my business/dreams. I had to rely on GOD solely and my drive to reach people who whole heartily wanted to support my business because they love the product, and not solely due to our relationship. Of course, I am beyond grateful for the support I received from my family and friends, but I wanted to be sure I had a great product that people who didn’t know me would love and purchase.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have worked in the health industry for over 12 years, and I am currently a consultant for one of the largest insurance providers in this region. Juggling my work-life and candle business can be overwhelming, but I’m not a quitter. When needed, I scale back and find strength from God and within. I teach my girls the same thing my mother taught me: never give up, and if you start something, you better finish it! So, when I’m not being a mom, wife, and working a full-time job, I’m making candles, packing orders, answering customer questions, and trying to fit in cardio somewhere in the day (lol). I am most proud of being a part of a collection of women that get it done! There are no excuses, just results and finding a way to make it all work. It is sometimes challenging, but I am most proud to have found a rhythm that works for me; for us (my family). I thank God for it all!
