We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yamel Molerio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yamel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I wanted to be a visual artist since I could remember. I was always the kid that was drawing and coloring. My mother was a Biology teacher and I used to draw a lot of posters for her class. During the 1980’s I started getting into Graffiti. It was a creative outlet during my teenager years. It also gave me a way to show artwork on a large scale. After High School, I was able to pursue my Bachelor in Fine Arts in painting.

Yamel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a visual artist. In high school, I started painting large scale graffiti murals. This gave me the confidence to continue studying art in college. I graduated from New World School of the Arts-University of Florida with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in painting. Since then, I have been exhibiting my artwork.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love the process of creating a work of art. I usually will look at work after I think I am done with it and I will go back and back again until I am satisfied with the finished product. The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when others look at your work and it speaks to them in a personal level. A lot of times, others will look at the work and see something that I did not noticed in the artwork. It is also rewarding when others appreciate the time, effort, and process that I have put into the work.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal or mission driving my creative journey is to show my work to as many people as possible. I want to create artwork until I can no longer do so physically. All creatives have a deep drive to create. It is not only that you want to create but you need to create in order to survive.
