We were lucky to catch up with Xinxun Liao recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Xinxun, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
One of the most meaningful examples of moving from idea to execution was building my career as an independent motion designer and expanding my work beyond academic projects into international collaborations.
The initial idea was simple: I wanted my creative work to have real-world impact and reach audiences beyond the classroom. However, I had no established client network, limited industry connections, and little experience managing international projects.
To turn that idea into reality, I first focused on building a strong professional portfolio and developing a clear personal brand. I actively participated in industry events, design competitions, and networking opportunities to increase visibility and credibility. At the same time, I researched the market, identified potential opportunities, and reached out to professionals and organizations whose goals aligned with my skills.
Once I secured my first international projects, the challenge shifted from finding opportunities to delivering results. I had to manage client expectations, create project timelines, communicate across different time zones, and balance creative vision with business objectives. Each project required continuous problem-solving, adaptability, and effective execution.
Over time, these efforts led to multiple international collaborations and long-term professional relationships. This experience taught me that successful execution is not about having a perfect plan from the beginning. It is about taking initiative, learning quickly, adapting to challenges, and consistently turning ideas into measurable outcomes.

Xinxun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Xinxun (Evian) Liao, and I am a motion designer specializing in visual storytelling and digital communication.
With a background in animation and an MFA in Motion Media Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I have developed a strong interest in using design as a tool for communication. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have become particularly passionate about transforming complex ideas into engaging visual experiences that are both accessible and meaningful.
My work spans motion design, brand communication, digital content creation, and visual storytelling. I enjoy working on projects that require both creative thinking and strategic problem-solving, especially when there is an opportunity to make information clearer, more engaging, and easier to understand.
I believe effective design goes beyond aesthetics. Every project begins with understanding the audience, defining communication goals, and identifying the most effective way to deliver a message. Rather than focusing solely on visual execution, I am interested in how design can support communication, strengthen engagement, and create value for both organizations and their audiences.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with clients, organizations, and creative teams from different industries and cultural backgrounds. These experiences have strengthened my ability to adapt, communicate effectively, and approach challenges from multiple perspectives. They have also reinforced the importance of curiosity, continuous learning, and collaboration in the creative process.
As I continue to grow as a designer, I hope to explore new ways of combining storytelling, technology, and design to create work that is thoughtful, engaging, and impactful. My goal is not only to create compelling visuals, but also to help people better understand ideas, connect with information, and communicate more effectively.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m not driven by a single goal, but rather by a constant sense of curiosity and exploration.
I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between people and information. Why are some ideas instantly understood and remembered, while others struggle to resonate? This question continues to shape the way I approach design and storytelling, encouraging me to explore how visual communication can make ideas more accessible, engaging, and meaningful.
As a designer, I strive to transform complex concepts into experiences that feel clear, intuitive, and emotionally engaging. I believe that great design is more than visual expression—it is a form of communication that helps people understand, connect, and see things from new perspectives.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with people from different countries, cultures, and industries. These experiences have shown me that design has the power to transcend language and cultural boundaries. It can create shared understanding, bring diverse perspectives together, and help ideas reach wider audiences. The ability to create those connections between people, ideas, and experiences is what continues to inspire and drive my creative journey.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is not simply completing a project, but continuously expanding my perspective throughout the process.
Creative work gives me the opportunity to explore a wide range of fields and ideas. From education and technology to branding and digital experiences, every project presents new challenges and introduces me to different ways of thinking. This constant learning process keeps me curious and motivates me to keep growing, both professionally and personally.
I also find great satisfaction in watching an idea evolve from an abstract concept into a tangible piece of work. When that work ultimately connects with an audience, sparks curiosity, evokes emotion, or inspires conversation, it reminds me why I chose this creative path in the first place. In those moments, I feel that all the exploration, experimentation, and effort behind the work have been worthwhile.
