We recently connected with Xin Sui and have shared our conversation below.
Xin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a lesson you learned in school that’s stuck with you and has meaningfully impacted your journey?
During the time I was at the American Film Institute as a film editor, I encountered several short film projects that became a pivotal learning experience for me. We were tasked with creating short films within a tight deadline. These projects seemed to go well at first, but as we got deeper and deeper, I always faced challenges, including creative differences within the team, technical issues, and time constraints.
The most important lesson I learned from this experience was the significance of effective communication and collaboration. In the world of editing, teamwork is essential. We had to learn to navigate different perspectives, find common ground, and efficiently communicate our ideas to ensure the project’s success.
This lesson has profoundly influenced my approach to my current role. I understand the importance of fostering a collaborative and open environment where ideas can be shared freely. I actively seek input from colleagues and clients, valuing diverse perspectives to enhance the creative process.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a film and video editor currently based in Los Angeles. I attended the Communication University of China for four years of undergraduate study in sound editing, during which time I had the opportunity to work on short films in sound design and editing. It was during this period that I discovered my true passion for editing. With this in mind, I made the decision to pursue further education at the American Film Institute (AFI) as an editing fellow.
During this time, I have made 15 short films as the editor and some of my work has been shortlisted for various international film festivals. I am now a freelance editor, assistant editor, DIT, and script supervisor for short films, music videos, commercials, reality shows, and vertical TV dramas. The reality show I edited had a total of 120,000 views on YouTube and all the other platforms and the vertical TV drama of 80 episodes also has 10000 views.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In my creative journey as a film and video editor, my overarching goal is to craft compelling narratives that resonate with audiences on an emotional level. I believe that storytelling is a powerful tool that can entertain, inspire, and provoke thought. Therefore, my future mission is to contribute to the creation of films and videos that leave a lasting impact.
I aim to bring stories to life by seamlessly weaving together visuals, sound, and pacing to evoke specific emotions and engage viewers. Each project presents a unique opportunity to explore different genres, styles, and themes, allowing me to continuously expand my creative horizons.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Seeing a project come together successfully and witnessing the audience’s reaction to the final product can be immensely gratifying. The collaborative nature of film editing, working with directors, producers, and other creatives, adds another layer of satisfaction as it involves bringing a shared vision to life.
