We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Xavier McGilberry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Xavier thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Growing up in a small town in Mississippi I seen hard times and limited resources up close. Surrounded by strong family, education and hard work was in our DNA. I can remember coming home from school and not being able to turn TV on or go outside until homework was completed and checked. I also remember having the worse handing writing ever and my family saying “you are smart but can not write. You are going to be a doctor.” That did not happen. I went to college and focused on business and branding. After college I took a position with Sprint Corp. and excelled quickly in the rankings of the company. I remember feeling that this was not my calling but still I never took action. Then a life changing moment happen. I got a call from hospital informing me my mother had a stroke. This was one of the hardest moments in my life. My mother recovered from her stroke but I started to notice things I never thought of before. The post hospital process was not patient friendly. The resources were not explained. The culture differences were not acknowledged. My mother was confused and little neglected due to lack of knowledge and financial status. This was the point I decided to take a risk and go into a totally different career path that had purpose and meaning.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The attraction to a career in home health sprang from firsthand experience with limited health care facilities and services. My mother was a stroke victim living in an area where the problem was prevalent. The situation drove me to seek a profession that ensured the availability of services for people who are unable to take care of themselves. I had originally aimed for a career in physical therapy, but somehow wound up in the corporate world for a period of time before going back to the health care industry. The work experience with the corporations afforded me with essential skills in business development that proved useful to my current role in a home care agency. The services of Home Care East significantly grew in undeserved areas, a milestone that was made possible under my leadership and supporting team members. We changed the dynamics within the organization by creating a culture that focuses on patient care and providing education to the same effect, both for the staff and the people in the community. It is rare that you connect with a team that is as passionate as you are about taking care of those in need. Our leader Belinda May make sure patient care is focal for our company. The leadership team carry out the operations and processes everyday to make sure this focal point is accomplished with every patient. The risk that I took to go into a new field was a blessing. This new domain gives me purpose everyday. To whom much is given much is required is the motto I embrace everyday!!! I get the benefit of smiles from family member and patients daily and you can not put a price on that!!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being in the medical field it is important to be honest and available. I built my reputation of being a person of my word and truly available 24/7 for families and employees in need. When you are passionate and love what you do it never feels like work.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing you clientele is to know your services and product. knowledge builds confidence and also allows you to give great information to your clients. This starts with spending time each day learning your services and industry.
