Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Woosung Jun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Woosung, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The LOVE MYSELF eyewear jewelry collection is hands down the most meaningful project I’ve worked on. Imagine this: an international individual, finding themselves in the different culture of the United States. It’s a beautiful yet challenging experience. That’s where the LOVE MYSELF collection came in.
The collection wasn’t just about crafting stylish eyewear and jewelry; it was a personal odyssey for me. Being immersed in a different culture, I found myself grappling with timidity rooted in the nuances of cultural differences. Enter LOVE MYSELF—a creative endeavor that turned into a profound journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
Each piece in the collection became a metaphorical stepping stone, a bridge connecting the gaps between my cultural roots and the vibrant diversity around me. The designs weren’t merely accessories; they were symbols of resilience and acceptance. Through intricate details and thoughtful aesthetics, the collection became a narrative of overcoming barriers and embracing individuality.
Wearing a piece from LOVE MYSELF wasn’t just about adorning myself with beautiful accessories; it was a daily affirmation of my growth and courage. The collection became a conversation starter, a way for me to share my story without uttering a single word. It allowed me to navigate social landscapes with newfound confidence, breaking through the shell of timidity that once defined my experience as an international in the US.
In essence, LOVE MYSELF transcended the realm of fashion; it became a testament to personal triumph over adversity. It’s a reminder that, through creativity and self-expression, we can transform challenges into opportunities for growth. And that, my friend, is why LOVE MYSELF holds an indelible place in my heart as the most meaningful project I’ve ever undertaken.

Woosung, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a jewelry CAD designer, and fashion jewelry designer. I design and create innovative and high-quality jewelry pieces using various CAD software and sketches.
I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in jewelry design, where I learned and applied different methods and materials for jewelry making, such as lost wax casting, enameling, and metalsmithing. I also participated in the ACC exhibition, where I showcased my jewelry collection inspired by Korean culture and history.
My cross-cultural experiences, passion, and ambitions as a transfer student from South Korea set me apart in my creative pursuits. I can understand and incorporate different aspects of various cultures into my design elements, resulting in unique and meaningful jewelry that appeals to diverse audiences and markets.
I am passionate about making jewelry with different techniques and love to challenge myself to adapt to new technologies in the jewelry field. I am constantly seeking to expand and improve my knowledge, skills, and expertise in order to make a credible contribution as a jewelry designer. I am excited to collaborate with other individuals in a corporation that is profitably using jewelry design as a tool for change and is shaping a more creative, sustainable, and inclusive future.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the power to connect with others on a deep, emotional level. Art has this incredible ability to transcend language and cultural barriers, reaching straight into the core of human experience. When someone resonates with my work, whether it’s a story, a piece of music, or a visual creation, it’s like forging a profound connection. Knowing that my creativity has the potential to evoke emotions, spark thoughts, or even inspire someone else is immensely fulfilling. It’s a shared experience that goes beyond words—a silent conversation between the creator and those who find meaning in the art. That, to me, is the true magic of being a creative soul.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
It’s crucial for society to recognize and value the artistry and craftsmanship involved in jewelry design. Understanding that each piece is a unique expression of creativity contributes to the overall appreciation of the field. Moreover, education plays a pivotal role. Having accessible and quality education programs, whether through formal institutions or mentorship opportunities, ensures that aspiring designers have the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in this craft.
Independent designers often face challenges in getting their work noticed. Creating platforms, both physical and digital, specifically tailored for independent jewelry designers allows them to showcase their creations and build a unique identity in the market. Therefore, if there is any chance to support the artist as the tool of informing their work that will be helpful.
Moreover, establishing grants, funding, or even business support programs specifically designed for jewelry designers can alleviate some of the financial pressures. It allows designers to focus on creating without the constant worry about the financial aspects of running a creative business.
