We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wileen Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wileen below.
Wileen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage my own social media /company and it has been very challenging but what I do is educate myself on how to market my brand . I chose to do so simply because it can be really hard trusting someone to help you build your brand or trust that their intentions are as pure as I am. It’s really a challenging job to have because it’s a lot to juggle. A lesson that I learned is to hire someone who has that same passion and drive for your brand as you do. It is very important to hire in areas that you are weak in so therefore ,I am looking forward in building me a dream team that can take my brand to the next level and bring my vision to life because it’s only so much that you can do on your own when you can actually hire a team or someone to help you acquire your goals with ease.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Wileen I am a self taught hairstylist who is now a licensed master cosmetologist, I got into this industry because I had a passion for styling hair and being able to make people feel good about themselves. I started my hair business after having my daughter and experiencing postpartum hair loss pushed me to make my wigs where I was able to protect my natural hair. I started off selling bundles and hair pieces then eventually I learned how to make custom wigs and my clients would love how my wigs looked so natural that they begin ordering them from my website and it went on from there! I’m most proud of the quality of my products, my clients knows if I create them then they’re quality products! I take pride in how amazing my products are and I take my time to test them and make sure that it’s right for my customers! I give my clients exactly what I would use and wear on my own hair. Which is why my brand has been around and running for 7 years.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
It was during the pandemic and everything was closed down, I couldn’t get any new inventory from my vendors because they were not at their warehouse due to everything being shutdown because of the pandemic. My money was running low because I wasn’t able to style my clients. Luckily I have a collection of wigs because I would make them and wear them 1/2 times and store them, people were on social media live daily because there was nothing to do so I thought to myself I’m going to do a live wig auction with my wigs and call it “ Wig warz”! I also have people asking to purchase the wig that I’d be wearing right off of my head. Once I came up with the idea, I created a flyer advertising my wig auction on social media and my response was so overwhelming I sold all wigs and made a good profit.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started doing hair on the side when I was in high school. I never thought that it would be a career path for me because I didn’t think that I would make a good living on this industry and also I was not educated on all of the possibilities that I would have in the beauty industry. Fast forward I am at a crossroads in my life where I can get into nursing and become a nurse or become a successful hairstylist and my passion pushed me into the hair industry and I honestly do not regret my choice one bit.
