We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Whitney Kay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Whitney below.
Whitney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
The biggest problem I have ever faced in business was the problem of feeling stuck. I had been in business for a number of years and I was really starting to feel like I wasn’t going anywhere.
Every time inspiration struck, it would quickly be followed by the realization that I hadn’t done anything with my ideas in quite some time. Not only did I have no motivation to make any changes, but it also came to my attention that I didn’t actually have the money to do anything even if I wanted to.
This stuck feeling was made worse when I realized that the people around me seemed so much further ahead than me in life and business which, of course, left me wondering how they were able to accomplish so much so soon.
And then I realized the problem was me. I was in my own way!
It didn’t take long before I began to feel like my business was not what I wanted it to be and the only way for me to change it was for me to make some changes. I put my head down and stopped focusing on what “others” were doing and focused on developing my skill set and my abilities.
I started to work my business, not just in it and I was able to learn that the only way for me to accomplish what I really wanted was for me to become a better version of myself.
What I learned from all of this is that as long as you are the biggest problem you have, your business will never be what it could be.
If you’re stuck, you have to find a way out!
You can’t just wait for someone to break through the wall and rescue you – that’s not going to happen – so . . . get up, look around for a different route and go find it! Spend time with mentors, read books, surround yourself with positive and supportive people, and do what you can to become a better version of yourself.
Once you start this process, you’ll find that the only way out is through, and before you know it, your business will no longer be something for which you feel stuck anymore!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I reside in Dallas, Texas, with my husband, two children, and a fur baby. I have over 13 years of experience working in the brand, social media, and digital marketing space, I specialize in brand and strategy development for service-based entrepreneurs and coaches. I have built a global organization within the direct selling space and helped mentor thousands of women around the globe. I am the founder/CEO of Social Savvy Influencer – a full-scale brand and social media agency. I launched my podcast in 2020. UNOMOSS Podcast shines a light on what it takes to build a thriving business while helping other female entrepreneurs learn how to build, launch and scale profitable social selling businesses; of their own!
When I’m not developing strategies for female entrepreneurs, I can be found creating content like Instagram Reels and blog posts or moderating stages as a top moderator on popular social audio apps like Clubhouse.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2013 I moved to Dallas, Texas after going through a divorce. I had to rebuild my brand and network in a city I was brand new to. 4 years into living here I found myself stuck and seventeen thousand dollars in debt with two eviction notices, unable to rent or live anywhere. I was lost. My business was no business.
This was the lowest I had ever been in life. Instead of giving up, I chose to breakthrough. I made up my mind to take action. I began taking steps to pull myself back together. I got rid of everything that was not working for me (including people) and started over. I had no choice!
For the next year, every step I took led me closer to my dream door. I created a road map, took action, made the right decisions, and committed myself to my success. In 10 months I was able to successfully pay off my debt, transform my business, create long-lasting relationships, and increase the value of my brand.
I did not give up on myself or let anyone else do it for me. I am not afraid to fail because every time I fall down I get back up stronger than before. This is part of life. But what is important is that you recognize your power to propel yourself forward.
When the storm clouds gather, that is when you see your true colors shine through. You can’t always be strong but if you know how, you can show up as someone who is!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I recently have had to experience one of my greatest pivots in business. For years, I have been used to creating course after course, product after product – dealing with the ebbs and flows of income, not ever creating “consistent” income flow. In 2021, I committed to creating a single offer focus for 2022 – a membership coaching program.
Instead of dealing with launch after launch, I have a consistent open-door opportunity to grow a sustainable business through continued membership. Already, this has allowed me to scale my business to new heights, and create a sustainable business.
When you are open to pivoting in your career, errors or problems that arise can allow you to change your course of action. This is one of the most important skills to have in business. Being able to pivot allows you to keep the doors of productivity unlocked and keep them open for future opportunities.
Also, pivoting can allow your career to last longer. Instead of trying to create too many things which burn you out, with pivoting you essentially eliminate that fear altogether. Instead of thinking “what am I going to do next?” or “where is the new opportunity”, you are able to find new opportunities within existing work that allows for consistent growth.
