We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wesleigh Bishop. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wesleigh below.
Wesleigh, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I actually opened my own practice less than a year ago and it was equal parts exciting, challenging, and scary. The key challenge I’ve experienced since opening is related to marketing. More on that later.
My best pieces of advice for someone considering starting their own practice would be:
1. Find a mentor in your area of expertise who has gone before you, someone who has walked a similar path. Set up regular meetings with this mentor and don’t hesitate to ask them all the questions. You may find you have questions your mentor can’t answer, and how beautiful is it that the two of you can put your heads together and figure out a solution?! If you’re determined to be successful in your new venture, be willing to compensate your mentor — the two of you can discuss whether or not this is appropriate. Either way, be respectful of their time and express gratitude for their guidance. Chances are it’ll be a priceless experience and will save you valuable time and help you to avoid making unnecessary mistakes…you will still skin your knees from time to time, but hopefully with less frequency and severity.
2. Have a marketing plan in place. Ask yourself these questions: How much should I budget? What forms of marketing are most effective for my services? Who is my target audience? Where does my target audience spend the most time consuming information? These would be excellent things to discuss with your mentor as well. If I could change anything about how I got started, I would’ve spent more time answering these questions and utilizing them to create a marketing plan prior to opening my practice.
3. Have a strong referral program. I have found that word of mouth has been my best marketing tool, and rewarding clients for referrals simultaneously shows my gratitude to the referrer and encourages more of the same action. As my referral program gives credit towards future visits, it also encourages repeat business. On the same note, don’t be afraid to ask for positive reviews. In general, people are far more likely to write a review after a negative experience than after a positive one, so you have to be willing to ask. This is a great, free way to get your business out there. And everyone I’ve asked has been more than happy to help in this way!
Wesleigh, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am, first and foremost, a daughter of the King — Jesus is my Lord & Savior. Any good that you see in me is thanks to Him.
My husband, Tim, and I have 4 sons ranging in age from 4 to 17. My boys and my husband are my world. We stay busy with the kids’ activities and sporting events. It’s a full, beautiful life. I also enjoy reading (personal development as well as fiction), knitting, crocheting, and puzzles.
I started my career as a pharmacist and mostly enjoyed my job. I completed a residency so I could specialize in ambulatory care, which allowed me to work one-on-one with patients and build a rapport, leading to successful health outcomes. I also had the opportunity to serve as a preceptor for pharmacy and medical students, as well as residents, and to act as an adjunct professor. I have a passion for teaching, so this was one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
Somewhere along the road, I began to have some health challenges that lacked solutions. I found myself desperate for answers to my health issues and didn’t find them in conventional medicine. I felt hopeless and let down by the medical world I’d been immersed in my entire life.
Gut health supplements from the OG gut health company, Plexus, changed my health in 2015 and opened my mind to a more holistic approach. Over the last decade, I’ve seen thousands of lives impacted by simply supporting the body and allowing it to function the way it was meant to. In 2023, I was introduced to Systems Health Care (SHC) and was, again, amazed at how God created our bodies to heal. My son’s allergy and breathing issues were dramatically improved during and after his SHC visits. My long-term bladder issues were resolved after a couple of visits as well. As our family continued to see results, I felt God leading me to learn this technique so He could use me to help others utilizing SHC.
In 2024, my studies to learn applied kinesiology and SHC began. My best friend is my mentor and I am incredibly blessed by her guidance. I became certified in SHC in early 2025, and Rooted Wellness was born. I specialize in identifying and addressing imbalances in the body through applied kinesiology, muscle testing, and other holistic techniques. I help uncover the root cause of health challenges and identify the specific support the body needs so it can heal as God created it to…providing lasting results. In my office, we focus on not only physical wellness but also emotional, spiritual, and social wellness as well.
I am skilled at patient education, I love people well, and I strive to be obedient to where God is leading me in all things — because of this, I believe I am uniquely equipped to walk alongside people on their journey to wellness.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I believe hands-on experience is king in most, if not all, areas of expertise. You can study all day, every day. You can read all the leadership/personal development books. You can listen to all the podcasts. BUT it’s the DOING, the ACTION that will make you better and, ultimately, set you apart. Do those other things help? Of course. But they will not get you where you want to be. Only YOU can make that happen through daily action. Will you be great the first time you do something? Maybe, but probably not. Will you fail? Absolutely. But the only way you will get better is by putting in the reps. Becoming ok with failure and embracing it, even, can build the resilience and experience needed to succeed. Allow failure/missing a goal to motivate and fuel you to get a little bit better each time.
Decide that quitting isn’t an option from the start. Decide that you’re 100% all-in so you don’t wake up every day thinking, “Do I really want to do this?” The decision is already made, so you can just get up and take action and put in the reps!
Another important key to success has been staying humble. It makes all the difference when you can admit when you don’t have the answer to something. You’ll never know everything. There will always be gaps in your knowledge and I believe, in my field, being able to admit that builds respect and trust. It also allows me to be a lifelong learner. It pushes me to better myself and my knowledge on an ongoing basis. I learned early on in my pharmacy career that it was impossible to know everything about every medication; it mattered more that I knew where and how to find the answer and that I was willing to look until I found it.
Most importantly, if you work with people like I do, remind yourself that each person has a unique story. They want to be heard. They want to feel like someone cares. So show them you care: Ask about their family. Ask about things that are important to them. Take notes if you need to, so you can remember what you talked about in the past. Pray with and over them. Send hand-written notes with a small appreciation gift inside…this could be a discount for future business, a scripture card, a logo magnet or pen, a free drink voucher at a local coffee shop (my favorite option), or anything else, large or small. It’s less about the gift and more about showing them you were thinking of them and are thankful for their business. I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”…there’s so much truth to that.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As previously mentioned, I started my career as a pharmacist. This was a fulfilling career for a time but as my belief in holistic health and wellness grew, that career became less aligned with my values and beliefs. The desires of my heart also changed as our family grew and my health improved, and I began to yearn for more time at home with my kids and teacher husband (he was home for all the school breaks with our kids).
In 2019, I was blessed to be able to match my pharmacist income through selling the same gut health supplements that changed my health. At that time, I decided to transition from working full-time outside the home to working from home which gave me control over my schedule. While this, in effect, cut my income in half, it was priceless to be able to be present at home and no longer miss my kids’ activities. When we welcomed our youngest in 2021, it was such a GIFT to effectively have a never-ending maternity leave.
After staying home with my kids for 6 years, I felt a stirring in my heart and that God was leading me to something new. At first, I wasn’t sure where He wanted me but I did know I didn’t want to work for someone else. I wanted to continue to make my own schedule. Eventually, it became apparent to me that my next step was to learn applied kinesiology and muscle testing and open my own practice. Over the last decade, God prepared me for this and I’m so grateful to be where I’m at, doing what I’m doing. If you would’ve asked me 10 years ago where’d I’d be now, I never could’ve guessed or imagined this. But isn’t that so like God?! (Ephesians 3:20) I’ve always had a desire to be an entrepreneur but honestly never thought I’d have what it took…truth is, I don’t have what it takes but, with God as my business partner, I can. (Matthew 19:26)
