We recently connected with Vyolet Jin and have shared our conversation below.
Vyolet, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project is undoubtedly my recently completed thesis, an exploration of negative emotion. I have always experienced emotions intensely, especially negative ones. When these emotions become overwhelming, I yearn to ground them and engage in heartfelt conversations with them, much like sitting down for a comforting talk over a sweet drink. In my thesis project, I embarked on a journey to connect with my negative emotions and explore how to infuse them into my artwork.
Through introspection, I discovered that while others might represent sadness using cold colors or low resolutions, I am drawn to express my emotions through explosive, bold, and contradictory colors. I aim to convey my sorrow in a manner that wouldn’t burden the audience but rather captivate them with an energetic and liberating approach. To achieve this, I choose the realm of fashion illustration, drawing inspiration from creative makeup and y2k outfits as the perfect canvas to convey my ideas.
While I acknowledge there is much room for improvement in my thesis project, the profound connection I established between my emotions and my art remains incredibly significant to me. It is a strong foundation for honing my artistic style and defining my creative identity.
Vyolet, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello there! For those who are unfamiliar with my work, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Vyolet Jin, and I just completed my MFA degree at the School of Visual Arts. My journey into the world of illustration began with a deep-rooted passion for drawing, which led me away from the path of finance, which my parents had “suggested” for me. Within the creative realm, I primarily focus on publication-related illustrations, encompassing editorial pieces, children’s books, and advertising visuals. My specializations lie in capturing figures and animals with a touch of whimsy and lackadaisicalness, alongside creating dynamic and captivating backgrounds that add a playful twist to my artwork.
When crafting illustrations, I take pride in emphasizing and exaggerating the most crucial aspects of an image, enabling me to present a distinctive and refreshing visual perspective while effectively conveying the essence of the subject matter at hand. Through this approach, I strive to offer my clients solutions that not only captivate their audiences but also accurately portray the essence of their articles or products. For example, if I was tasked with making an orange juice advertisement, I might exaggerate the scale of the drink glass to the size of a Christmas tree and minimize the drinkers to the size of ornaments who are happily enjoying themselves.
Among my proudest achievements is the ability to infuse my work with a unique touch, setting it apart from others in the industry. I take great joy in providing clients with eye-catching visuals that leave a lasting impression and speak to the core message they wish to convey.
Overall, I’m driven by a genuine love for illustration and a desire to create art that resonates with others. My passion for this craft fuels my commitment to deliver compelling, distinctive, and effective illustrations for various creative projects. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my work!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the sheer joy of turning my passion into a fulfilling career. Despite the occasional exhaustion, the happiness I derive from doing what I love makes it all worthwhile. Witnessing my art style evolve and improve over time brings me a profound sense of accomplishment and motivates me to keep pushing my boundaries. The journey of growth and self-expression as an artist is truly makes my glass full.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that my work had to be perfect before presenting it to others. During my studies, I was consistently advised to only showcase my work when it was flawless and fully refined. While this advice holds merit, I carried this perfectionist mindset into every aspect of my art, resulting in excessive detailing and extended timelines for completing projects. As a consequence, I often ended up submitting my work at the last possible moment.
This pattern eventually led me to a realization. I recognized that my obsession with perfection hindered my artistic growth and caused unnecessary stress. It was at this point that I challenged this belief and experimented with a new approach. I began emphasizing the essential aspects of an image, letting go of the need for absolute perfection. This change in perspective allowed me to create more freely and confidently, focusing on conveying the core message of my artwork rather than striving for unattainable perfection. Once I embraced this shift in mindset, my artistic process became more enjoyable and efficient.
