We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vilpa Shah. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vilpa below.
Vilpa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Honestly, every bridal henna I do is the most meaningful project to me — because every bride is a world of her own.
When a bride sits in front of me, she carries with her a unique story, a lifetime of emotions, and the hopes of an entirely new chapter. She places her hands — and in many ways, her trust — in mine. That is not something I ever take lightly.
In those quiet moments before the ceremony, I listen as much as I create. Her culture, her symbols, her nervousness, her joy — all of it flows into the design. I am not just an artist in that moment. I am a witness to one of the most significant transitions of her life.
That is what makes bridal henna sacred to me. Every pair of hands is different. Every story deserves to be honoured. And every design I create is my way of saying — I see you, I heard you, and I made something just for you.
That privilege never gets ordinary. And I hope it never does.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Vilpa Shah — a certified henna artist with over 16 years of experience, and a lifelong love affair with one of the world’s most ancient art forms.
My story begins in India, where mehndi wasn’t just art — it was woven into the rhythm of everyday life, celebrations, and sacred traditions. As a child, I was captivated by its beauty and cultural significance, and what began as a quiet hobby gradually became an undeniable passion. Traveling across various regions of India deepened that passion further — each region carrying its own distinct style, symbolism, and soul. Those experiences became the foundation of everything I create today.
Now based in the southeastern United States, I bring that rich heritage to a new audience — blending traditional Indian artistry with contemporary aesthetics to create designs that feel both rooted and refreshingly modern.
What I offer goes well beyond applying henna. I specialize in custom, intricate mehndi designs tailored to each individual’s story and personality. My services cover a wide spectrum of occasions — Bridal Mehndi, Sangeet, Engagements, Eid, Diwali, Karva Chauth, Baby Showers, Birthdays, Ladies’ Nights, Corporate Events, School Functions, and Fundraisers. Every event is a new canvas, and I approach each one with the same level of care and intention.
What sets me apart begins with something most clients don’t expect — I make my henna paste entirely from scratch, using 100% natural henna powder and essential oils, completely free from chemicals or artificial dyes. For me, safety and quality are not optional. Beyond the product itself, it’s the experience I create that defines my brand. Clients don’t just leave with beautiful henna — they leave feeling heard, celebrated, and cared for.
The journey here wasn’t without its challenges. Establishing myself in a new country, introducing a traditional art form to unfamiliar audiences, and bridging cultural expectations with modern tastes all required patience, resilience, and continuous growth. But every challenge only strengthened my craft and my commitment. When you are truly passionate about what you do, every obstacle becomes part of the story worth telling.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me — especially brides, who invite me into one of the most intimate and significant moments of their lives. The mehndi ceremony is often the very first event of the wedding festivities, and being part of that joy, that anticipation, that love — it never gets ordinary.
Looking ahead, I’m exploring portrait-style mehndi — incorporating the likeness of a bride, a loved one, or even a beloved pet into designs — adding an entirely new dimension of personalization. I’m also working toward an online teaching platform to reach aspiring henna artists across the globe.
At its heart, my brand — Vilpa Shah’s Mehndi Designs — is personal, professional, and deeply rooted in tradition, passion, and love. That is what I want every potential client, follower, and fellow artist to know about me and my work.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There are so many moments in this craft that fill my heart — but if I had to capture it in one word, it would be connection.
The most rewarding part of being a henna artist is that instant — when I lift my cone, the design is complete, and my client sees her hands for the first time. That look. That exhale. That quiet smile or sudden tear. No amount of words can replicate what that moment feels like. It reminds me, every single time, why I do this.
But the rewards go deeper than that single moment. Henna carries centuries of culture, ritual, and meaning within its patterns. Every time I work, I feel a quiet responsibility — to honour that heritage, to keep it alive, and to share it with those who may be experiencing it for the very first time. That feels like a privilege beyond measure.
There is also something deeply personal about the act of creating itself. When I am working — cone in hand, pattern flowing — the world grows still. It is meditative. It is freeing. No two designs are ever the same, and that freedom to express, to interpret, to innovate within a tradition I love deeply — that is a gift I never take for granted.
Being a henna artist is not just what I do. It is how I connect with the world around me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
This question is close to my heart — because I’ve lived both sides of it.
The simplest and most powerful thing society can do is truly value artists. Not just admire their work, but respect the years of dedication, skill, and sacrifice that go into it. Art is not a hobby that accidentally became a service — it is a profession, a discipline, and for many of us, a lifelong calling. Fair compensation is not just a business matter. It is an acknowledgment that what we create has real worth.
I also deeply believe in the importance of choosing local and independent artists over mass-produced alternatives. When you book an independent henna artist, you are not just getting a design — you are supporting a living tradition, a real person’s livelihood, and a story that no factory or printed template can replicate. That choice matters more than people realize.
And finally — give artists a platform. Share their work. Tag them. Recommend them. Write that review. In today’s world, visibility is everything, and sometimes the most generous thing you can do for an artist you love is simply to tell someone else about them.
A thriving creative ecosystem doesn’t happen by accident. It is built by communities that choose to show up for their artists — with appreciation, with fairness, and with their whole heart.
