We recently connected with Vester Harper and have shared our conversation below.
Vester, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
When I started my business, my family and friends were there from day one to support my venture. While I’ve definitely built my clientele based on the experience I provide, most bookings heavily depend on referrals. Over the past 20 years, my family and friends have have hired my company for personal events such as weddings, birthday celebrations, etc, but they have also lined me up with their contacts which has allowed me to build a large corporate clientele as well. I can honestly say that my family and friends have paved they way to what I can see as a longevous future.
Vester, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been interested in the performing arts in some form or fashion since I was a little girl. From theater to dance, musical theater, and more. At some point in my early adulthood after visiting several Karaoke Bars with friends, I became fascinated with Karaoke and decided to invest in a few things equipment-wise so that my family and friends could enjoy the luxury of Karaoke without having to go to a bar or club. I looked up a few years later and I had spent thousands of dollars on the best equipment there was out there to run a karaoke show. From the top of the line microphones to the best hosting software. I had also purchased a heft collection of songs making my Karaoke Song list one of the most diverse lists in the city. Using my theater-trained skills and my business skills I decided to take the business to another level and venture into providing completely professional services not only for my family and friends but also to local bars, clubs, and other venues. As well as doing private parties and events. My brand began to flourish right in front oy eyes. I made sure every detail of service was on point and the best it could be. I combined a sparkling personality with great showmanship with an amazing product and service and the next thing I knew I had been deemed the best and hottest karaoke company in the city. I’m definitely proud of myself for pushing forward with my vision and not giving up or giving in especially within an industry that is oversaturated and mostly male populated. I am a black female who owns her own business within an industry that you would least expect, and I pride myself on that. It makes me strive to be the best at all times. I have been fortunate enough to gain not only loyal clients, fans, and followers over the past 20 years, I have also gained a Karaoke Family that is the root of everything I do. I look forward to many many more years in business and taking my brand to even higher places than I’ve ever done before.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Most people don’t see or think to look at a Karaoke Business as something that is completely professional from head to toe. I have helped build my reputation within this market by not only showing up on time with the best equipment and the best attitude I have presented myself as a professional that demanded respect. Contracts must be signed in order to book our company. I applied everything from the corporate world with any other professional service to our business and it has made our reputation out to be the best karaoke company in the city. I made sales calls, offered demonstrations, public brand mixers to get the word out that we were not only top tier but that we were giving everything that we promised and more. I have also made sure I keep that fine line of business and pleasure very clear. This has also helped build my reputation, partying is a part of the business but I’ve never let that get in the way of my professionalism.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has been the good old traditional “word of mouth.” Once I host a private party for someone that eventually turns into 5 more parties booked. Most guests that attend a party that I am hosting are completely blown away by the professionalism and entertaining style I operate with. I show up cute, bring a great energy, use the best equipment and make sure everyone has a great time, they never seem to expect that. This makes them want us for their own event. As well as people who experience us in the club/bar scene they always want to get that exclusively for themselves at a private event. So again “word of mouth” has definitely been the best source of new clients for me.
