We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vence Ray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vence, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally when people started expressing a need for my music and content on social media. From the ages of about ten through some of my teenage years, I played in a band in my home country, Haiti. Back then, I did not aspire to make creating music and content a career. After moving here to the US in 2010, I continued playing music here and there in churches or the odd gig. It wasn’t until I started posting my music and content consistently on social media a few years ago that I realized a need for my art. It wasn’t until then that I realized that I wanted to pursue this path professionally.

Vence, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I like to say that I am a music producer, musician, and composer; I create epic music and videos. What inspires my music and content is life, movies, people, etc… I am a big Marvel fan. A lot of my video edits are inspired by Marvel movies The mission for my music is to create the soundtrack for people, whether they are crushing it in the gym on a Monday morning, sweeping their space on a Tuesday afternoon, driving to work on Friday morning. or relaxing by the pool on a Sunday evening. The mission for my content on social media is to inspire people and other creatives.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Although I’m still on the smaller scale when it comes to social media following, I believe the following two things helped me grow an engaging following in a fairly short time period. The first of which is creating quality and valuable content that is either inspiring, informative, or entertaining. A good example of that is my “Duet This” content that inspires other creatives to add their own art to my music. I’m doing, my content gets shared to even more people across the web.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I listen to a podcast called “The Futur with Chris Do” every time I’m doing a workout in the gym. Even though it is a podcast that “explores the interesting overlap between design, marketing, and business,” I would encourage any creative that aspire to make creating art a career to listen to this podcast, even if your not a designer (like myself). I have found tremendous value from it.
