We were lucky to catch up with Valerie Dornema recently and have shared our conversation below.
Valerie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
As a nurse practitioner and educator with a doctorate in nursing practice, I’ve always been passionate about teaching and guiding future nurses. However, there was a defining moment in my life that profoundly changed the trajectory of my career and deepened my commitment to the nursing profession.
In 2016, I was involved in a severe car accident that left me critically injured. The experience of being a patient, almost losing my life, and enduring the uncertainties of critical care was a turning point. Lying in that hospital bed, I was acutely aware of the fragility of life and the immense impact that compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals can have on a patient’s journey.
During my recovery, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, expertise, and empathy of the nurses who cared for me. Their unwavering support not only facilitated my physical healing but also inspired me to reflect deeply on my role as a nurse educator. This experience ignited a profound sense of purpose within me and birthed NCLEX GEM REVIEW, LLC a nursing education and consulting company that ensure every nursing student is equipped not only with clinical knowledge but also with the compassion and resilience that define exemplary patient care.
This harrowing experience taught me invaluable lessons about empathy, the importance of patient-centered care, and the incredible strength of the human spirit. It reminded me that nursing is not just a profession but a calling to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. As I returned to my role as an educator, I infused these lessons into my teaching, emphasizing the holistic approach to nursing that considers the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of patients.
Today, I am more dedicated than ever to mentoring the next generation of nurses, instilling in them the values and skills that were so pivotal in my own recovery. My journey from patient to educator has reinforced my belief in the power of nursing to transform lives, and it continues to inspire me to strive for excellence in everything I do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
