We were lucky to catch up with Valencia Snow recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Valencia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was probably about 7 or 8 years old. I was still living in Indiana. Every year there was a city wide picnic that mostly everyone attended. This year in particular they had a stage setup for people to do karaoke. I ran up there and sung The Shoop Shoop Song by Betty Everett. I got a really good response from everyone that was gathered around and in that moment I knew I wanted to be a star. Performing even at such a young age gave me a rush I never had experienced.
Valencia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Valencia Snow is many things. I’m a rapper, brand ambassador, sickle cell advocate & most recently I’m in nail school to be a nail tech. So let’s talk about how I got into nails. I’ve always loved going to the nail shop and started going to the shop with my mom when I was 9 years old. For most of my life I kept my nails done whether it be a basic French tip manicure as a child to when I got in high school and started wearing acrylic nails. I had a friend in high school that always made me feel good about my nails and she was the first person I would show each new set to. When she passed away not too long after graduation it was hard for me to get my nails done for a couple years so I went without. When I did eventually start getting back into wearing them I was in East Texas where nail salons aren’t in abundance especially Hawkins, TX. So I decided to teach myself how to do my own nails. I had everything I needed but eventually life got in the way before I could practice on anyone besides myself. Fast forward to 2020 and I’m on the search for a new nail shop after starting a new job. I walk into Urban Nail Bar and for the first time I see a black nail technician. It did take some time but once I was able to get an appointment with her I ended up learning a lot. She helped push me and inspired me to get into nail school that I’m currently still in. I provide services at my school for a discounted rate for both hands and feet for all genders. You don’t see many black nail techs and I’m glad to be a change for those who might need or it. The Valencia Snow brand is all about glitz and glam which I try to showcase with my collection of rhinestones. I want to take over the industry and keep the girls iced out!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For nails my biggest mission is to own a nail salon. Not just any salon I want to open a nail salon in the airport. I worked at a nail shop as a receptionist before and was surprised at how many flight attendants and people with luggage on their way to catch a flight stopped by. I feel like it’s the perfect spot. Musically my goal is I want to improve and get my message out there. Women struggle just like men and come up I want that to be heard just as much as my more sexual songs.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to put others on. Any time I’m given a platform I try to put someone in the door. A lot of people in Dallas don’t want to do that because they’re fearful of competition. I feel like there’s enough out there for us all to eat. You never know what could happen so I try to build as many bridges as possible networking is really key!
