We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Umraan Syed. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Umraan below.
Umraan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I honed my craft as a musician through a blend of self-taught experimentation and formal education. My journey began in the mid-late ’90s, exploring sound manipulation on a desktop computer, which sparked my interest in music composition. This curiosity led me to learn various instruments, including the recorder, violin, bass guitar, keyboard, and acoustic guitar. My musical influences were diverse, thanks to my father’s passion for progressive rock and my brother’s eclectic taste, exposing me to a wide range of genres.
Looking back, I could have accelerated my learning process by seeking more structured mentorship and networking opportunities earlier in my career. Connecting with experienced musicians and industry professionals could have provided valuable insights and guidance.
The most essential skills I developed were adaptability and a deep understanding of musical theory. These skills allowed me to blend different genres and create my unique sound. Additionally, mastering the art of storytelling through music has been crucial in connecting with my audience.
One of the main obstacles I faced was finding a balance between staying true to my artistic vision and adapting to the evolving music industry. Navigating the complexities of self-promotion and distribution in the digital age also presented challenges. However, these experiences have been instrumental in my growth as a musician and an artist.
Umraan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My music is characterized by metaphoric and lyrical writing, drawing inspiration from personal experiences and reflections. My debut album, “Bismillah,” marked my entry into the industry, showcasing my innovative sound that blends multiple genres. My latest work, “House in the Vines,” reflects my growth as a musician and individual, and I’m currently gearing up for my upcoming album, “Z E N I T H,” which promises to push the boundaries of music further.
I provide a fresh perspective in the music industry, offering listeners a journey through soundscapes that challenge conventional hip-hop norms. My music speaks to those seeking something new and different, tackling tough subjects like identity and grief with authenticity.
What sets me apart is my willingness to take risks and experiment with sound, combined with my ability to connect with listeners on a deeper level. I’m most proud of my ability to blend diverse influences into a cohesive sound that resonates with a wide audience.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my brand is about more than just music. It’s about pushing the limits of creativity, exploring the depths of human emotion, and forging a genuine connection with my audience. My work is a reflection of my journey, and I invite you to join me on this musical adventure.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
After playing in orchestras for half a decade throughout grade school, I found myself deeply ingrained in the classical approach to music, theory, structure, and rules. While this foundation was invaluable, it also imposed certain limitations on my creativity. As I ventured into the world of Progressive Hip Hop, I realized that to truly innovate and express my unique voice, I had to unlearn much of what I was strictly taught.
I embarked on a journey of re-educating myself, focusing on feel and emotion rather than rigid structures. This process involved experimenting with unconventional sounds, blending genres, and allowing my intuition to guide my compositions. It was a liberating experience that opened up new avenues for artistic expression and led to the development of my distinct sound.
The biggest lesson I unlearned was that there are no absolute rules in music. Creativity thrives on freedom, and sometimes breaking away from traditional norms is necessary to create something truly original and impactful.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non-creatives might struggle to understand the depth of emotion and personal transformation involved in my journey as a creative. For me, music is not just a form of art; it’s therapy. I experience emotions intensely, and there are moments when I feel unstable. However, my faith in Allah and my ability to channel these emotions into music provide me with a sense of purpose and direction.
Music allows me to express myself in ways that go beyond traditional forms of communication. It’s a transcendental experience that helps me connect with others on a deeper level and explore the complexities of the human experience. Through my music, I aim to provide a sense of solace and understanding to those who might be going through similar challenges.
The creative process is not just about producing something aesthetically pleasing; it’s about personal growth, healing, and finding a unique voice in a world that often values conformity. It’s a journey that requires vulnerability, resilience, and a willingness to explore the unknown.
