We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tye Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tye, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my business over 15 years ago. I’ve always been in or around the music and entertainment industries but never took advantage of it until I felt like it. Looking back had I taken on the opportunities then as opposed to later I don’t think I would be as far as I am now. Because mentally I was not prepared. I’m just grateful that what was for me found me. The lane I am in is not a smooth or easy one. Especially being a woman. People will try and ignore your value or undermine your authority to humble you because their egos won’t allow them to accept your value.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Tye “Empress Spade” Harris. I am a full time music and entertainment specialist as well as a social media marketing consultant amongst other things. I offer a variety of services not just in music in entertainment but beauty as well. I launched a cordless flatiron in 2024. I have a cosmetic line that I am currently rebranding. I do graphics and web design. Just to name a few. Music has always been my passion and the love for seeing artist win based on their own merit.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
My initial funding came from my angel of a father. He always believed in me and my potential. He always invested in my growth even when I didn’t want to grow. He invested in my first systems for my virtual assistant services and graphics design. As well as my first salon. He was/is the reason I work so hard to be great at what I do because he never stopped believing in me. I miss him dearly.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to realize that things are forever evolving and growing so your strategy needs to as well. What was once a great method may be outdated. Especially in music and entertainment. Because styles change and evolve constantly. I was not retaining clients at one point in time. It was due to me not growing with the times. It didn’t take long to correct though.
