We were lucky to catch up with Tony Schwartz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tony, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
I have been lucky enough to see how not to treat clients coming to see me. What I mean by that is I have seen when practitioners take clients for granted. When talking to a client is more like a recording on playback then really help people understand what is going on and what we (the practitioner) is trying to get to. You think things don’t change that much between appointments but really a lot can. When people in my profession take that for granted people feel like that are just a number when they are not. A lot of clinics don’t know their staff don’t have that training to work as a team to get that message of care to each other and then showing that as a team to the client.

Tony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So my name is Tony I have been in orthopedic bodywork for over 15 years now. With my training it makes me a very interesting little animal when it comes to placing me in the healthcare category. At my most basic I am trained in massage therapy but then I have training in muscle/skeletal (muscle/bone alignment) which fits under orthopedic speciality. Couple that with corrective exercise training I now then better understand the physical therapy world better and can then follow the work someone who is activity working with a physical therapist. Most of my clients are athletes from weekend warriors to olympians.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
In terms of learning something that helps people I would. I left my other job to enter this profession and that job paid very well but I felt like I had no life (long working hours) and I was not doing anything meaningful. As I age and my body breaks down from the physicality of the job I kinda wish it would pay more. I never stop learning from my clients and from other people in my profession so from that standpoint it’s great. As a whole would like more for what I do as an industry.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I listen and take a good 10 minutes or more just asking people questions before we get started. In other words I really show people how much their time matters to me by taking a few less people a day to have enough time listen and ask good questions. We all know what it’s like to go to (for example) the doctors and feel like you only get 5 minutes to talk to them. I choose to take fewer people and listen to each more to helpfully get a better outcome.
