We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Toni K.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Toni below.
Toni , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
The Hustle Behind the Harmony
Was it easy from day one? Absolutely not. I’m a DJ and a hairstylist, and starting out as a woman in a male-dominated DJ industry was an uphill battle. I offered to carry equipment for free just to learn the ropes, and I was still turned down.
I didn’t let that stop me. I traded sleep for practice, mixing day and night until my craft was undeniable. There were times I almost quit while “beating the pavement” for gigs, but that struggle taught me patience and drive. The Turning Point: Eventually, the industry shifted, and the spotlight found female DJs. Because I had already paid my dues and mastered the trade, the gigs started coming to me. I’ve applied that same relentless energy to hairstyling.
My Two Keys to Success:
Fall in love with the work: The passion has to fuel you when the paycheck isn’t there yet.
Never give up: Persistence is the difference between a hobby and a career.
If I could go back, I wouldn’t necessarily speed things up. The grind is what built my foundation. My advice? Don’t wait for an invite—build your own stage.

Toni , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I don’t just provide services; I curate vibes. Whether I’m behind the decks or behind the chair, my brand is built on the art of transformation.
My entrepreneurial spirit started as a “secret” barbershop. As a kid, my dad gave me money to take my brothers to the barber—instead, I’d cut their hair myself, pocket the cash.
My dad loved the results so much he eventually had me cutting his hair, too!
That same spark led me to a rap group in my youth, where I had an awakening: I saw how the DJ controlled the room’s heartbeat. I realized then that I didn’t just want to be on stage; I wanted to be the vibe.
Today, I’ve mastered the rare duality of Sound and Style:
The DJ: I solve the “empty dance floor” problem by reading a room’s energy and moving the crowd with precision and passion.
The Stylist: I solve the “confidence gap,” using my lifelong artistry to help clients express their truest selves through hair.
What sets me apart is grit. I broke into a male-dominated DJ industry by out-working everyone, practicing day and night until my skill was undeniable. I’ve traded sleep for mastery and “beating the pavement” for a reputation that now brings the gigs to me.
I am proud of the freedom I’ve built. I’m a self-made entrepreneur who knows that when you fall in love with your craft and refuse to quit, you don’t just find success you create it.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My secret weapon is my heritage. Being Russian and Ghanaian has given me a global ear that most DJs don’t have. I bring sounds from across the world to the booth, and my special talent is blending two completely different genres into one seamless vibe.
That “edge” makes my sets unique; it’s not just a playlist, it’s a cultural experience.
Whether I’m blending genres or blending a perfect fade, I am helping people express their truest selves.
Behind the chair, I’m giving someone the confidence to take on the world.
Behind the decks, I’m creating a rhythmic language that moves people.
The ultimate reward is freedom. I’ve taken my early days as a “secret barber” and a struggling female DJ and turned them into a career where I set the tone. Knowing that I’ve built a brand that celebrates my roots while allowing me to be a pioneer in two industries is what keeps me inspired every single day.
My mission is simple: I use my global perspective to make sure you look good, feel good, and move to a beat you’ve never heard before.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
If I had to recommend one book that aligns with my philosophy, it would be ‘Rare Breed’ by Sunny Bonnell and Ashleigh Hansberger. I
t’s about how the traits that make you an ‘outsider’ like my unique Russian/Ghanaian heritage or my obsessive drive to master two different crafts are actually your greatest competitive advantages.
It reminds me that you don’t need to fit into a box to be successful; you just need the grit to build your own.
