We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tom Harmon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Wedding photography is actually not my first career. In my previous life, I was a police officer. I became a police officer seeking respect. Growing up smaller in stature, I felt overlooked and believed that wearing the badge would change that. However, the reality of being a police officer was different from my expectations. It never truly felt like a fit for me. I wasn’t exceptional at it, and I always felt a bit out of place. This feeling, though uncomfortable, was a catalyst for change. Photography was always a lingering interest for me, but it took a back seat until a few years into my policing career. That’s when I picked up a camera again and I started learning everything I could about photography and the business side of it. At first it was just a hobby, but it turned into much more.
I’ve never been one to shy away from risk, so I dived in headfirst. Of course, there was fear – the fear of failure, of losing everything I had worked for. But the excitement and the sense of fulfillment I got from photography overshadowed all my fears.
The support from my family and friends was crucial in this transition. They were my first clients, my promoters, and my biggest cheerleaders. Their encouragement and belief in my talent played a significant role in getting my business off the ground. I then knew that I could leave the police force, and succeed as a full time photographer. This change in my career has given me the flexibility and freedom to spend more time with my kids and my family and that is worth the most to me,

Tom, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a wedding photographer for the last 14 years, and I provide personal, boutique style of wedding photography. I provide classic and creative wedding photos that highlight all the emotions of the day. I am most proud and fulfilled by providing my clients with expertise and professionalism in a calming, stress-free way. I love connecting with my couples on a deeper level in order to custom-tailor a photography experience just for them.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Definitely word of mouth. I’ve tried every type of marketing available, and nothing worked as well as providing world-class service. When couples feel comfortable trusting you, and they feel you’ve gone above and beyond to meet their needs, they recommend you to their family and friends.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what helped the most was showing up to each and every wedding like it was my own. I care deeply that all my couples get an amazing photography experience, and along with showing expertise and professionalism, I like to show my human side as well to connect with my couples.
