We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tobe Roberts. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tobe below.
Tobe, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
My brand “Wind Water Cloud” evokes the natural elements of wind, water, and clouds, which can represent fluidity, freedom, and change. My work is inspired mostly by nature, and just as wind can be calming yet powerful, water can be still yet moving, and clouds can be floating or turbulent as with a storm, I am varied in my styles of art and cannot be boxed into a specific style. I seek to explore the different tools available to me as well as invent new ones to help me express myself as an artist. I am a versatile, innovative, and powerful eclectic creative who wishes to give back in both heart and spirit.
Tobe, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Tobe is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (TSOA). He obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1996 in film producing and screenwriting. Since then, he has moved on to gain experience as a co-producer of a New York based video production company specializing in Native American programming, experience at Paramount Pictures East Coast Publicity, screenwriting/film & tv development at Atchity Productions.
Tobe is a multimedia artist, and independent art curator in NYC, showcasing the works of both established and young aspiring artists through a partnership with NYU. Tobe also mentors young filmmakers from NYU and, in the past, taught at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Tobe is dedicated to helping others, positivity, and collaboration with artists around the world. During the pandemic, when galleries were closed, he created a virtual gallery to give artists an outlet to express themselves during these challenging times. His artistic influences range from the techniques of his father, Tobe Roberts Sr. to those of Hasui Kawase, Bill Rabbit, JD Challenger, and R.C. Gorman.
Tobe continuously seeks out resplendent beauty and a story in his environment, making it a memory to share and evoking tranquility. Tobe’s fine art photography and intuitive abstracts focus mostly on the richness of bold colors, nature, metaphysical concepts, and striking landscapes.
Tobe likes to build his portfolio with images that inspire and evoke emotions. He believes art has energetic resonance, and the colors we select can move us and heal. Tobe enjoys including works that showcase his skills in composition, colors that complement each other, use of light, new media techniques and technologies, and different perspectives.
Tobe is also a follower of Budō (武道), a Japanese term describing martial arts or “The Martial Way” – and refers to those martial disciplines whose ultimate goal is spiritual, ethical, and/or moral self-improvement. His art can also be seen to reflect this principle. Additionally, he spreads awareness for Wild & Rescued Horses through his photography.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Art allows me to express myself in unique and personal ways. The process of creating is a cathartic and liberating experience for me either in creating my own work or curating art for others at the co-working spaces I manage in NYC. My art has the power to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and inspire others. Knowing that my work has touched someone else’s life is deeply rewarding.
My creative journey is a constant learning process. I find satisfaction in honing my skills, exploring new techniques, and evolving my style over time.
Art has the ability to bring people together and being part of a creative community, whether locally or online, provides me with a sense of belonging and support.
I appreciate the freedom that comes with pursuing a creative career. The ability to work on projects that align with my personal values and interests is deeply satisfying.
I contribute to the richness of cultural expression through my art. Knowing that my work adds to the cultural tapestry and may have a lasting impact is fulfilling.
