We recently connected with Tierra Pitchford and have shared our conversation below.
Tierra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I got my first client through word of mouth. I was at work in the classroom and the instructional coach at the time remembered I did event planning. She let me know at her meeting one of the other instructional coach was looking for someone to be the day of coordinator for her daughter’s wedding and she asked was it ok for her to give the lady my number. I said absolutely, I spoke with the lady over the phone and let her know how I can assist and what the Day of Coordinator does. She mentioned that’s exactly what she needed someone that can deal with vendors and ensure decorations were done.
I was so overjoyed that I received my first paid client my husband was also there to help assist. We received so many positive comments about our services it was a great feeling to know someone will pay just have to find the right people.

Tierra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Tierra Pitchford, wife to D’Jon, mother of 3, DJ. Amari, and Dylan. The owner of Brilliant Moments Event Planning and an Elementary Assistant Principal.
Brilliant Moments EP was established because I love the event planning world and being able to assist people with coordinating, planning and decorating for their milestones. Another reason I decided to start an event planning business is because I started planning events in high school since I was the class president so my biggest event while in high school was prom. I continued event coordinating and planning while in college with the Multicultural Affairs Department and various student groups.
I am most proud of my determination to continue to push through the highs and lows of running a business.
To my future clients, Our Visions Together Creates a Brilliant Moment. We pride ourselves on being affordable and truly there for the clients.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of Mouth and Social Media has been the best source of new clients for me.
Word of mouth has helped a lot because family, friends, clients will refer others to me for specific needs.
Having a social media presence also helps a lot because you get to connect with others that may not be one of your followers or friends. Having others share your post and being consistent on social media is very important to gain more clients.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team can be hard at times and the morale may take a dip as well. My advice to managing and maintaining a team and high morale is the consistency you have with showing appreciation to the team allowing them to have input and realizing that the business can not function without having a successful team behind you.
