Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Thomas Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Thomas, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.

Starting your own business is always risky. I cashed out my 401K and invested not just in my own company, but in myself! There have been times I thought about going back into the workforce, where I could make a substantial income. But I would always have the what if’s. And seeing the change in people after they use my products, makes the hard work I put into providing a quality product at a reasonable price is the most gratifying experience I have ever felt. The company continues to evolve and has grown substantially since its humble beginning. What surprising me more, is that I have grown personally since investing everything I have into NuYu Products…and that is priceless.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Who am I? Just a SoCal dad and grandpa that relocated to Utah in 2011 after a divorce. I’ve had quite a journey…some ups and lots of downs! I have a business degree and have always been successful managing operations for fortune 500 companies. On my way home from work one night in February of 2021, I got in a really bad car accident. Then I lost my job that same month. After a bout with depression, I knew I needed to make some changes and begin living life to the fullest. I thought to myself, “what if I could be just as successful running my own company?” So, I decided to follow my dreams and inspire people with the Beard Oils and Beard Balms that I had created for myself. I began developing my Brand and launched NuYu Products on August 1, 2021.
I want to help people find what I needed most…SELF-LOVE and SELF-CARE!
What sets NuYu Products apart from other self-care products is a) the quantity of high-quality all-natural ingredients we use in our products, and b) we don’t sell products, we help people with their self-care regimen.

How’d you meet your business partner?

My business partner is my sister Anna. When we were in elementary school, we had a candy business together. That’s right! We sold candy out of our living room window. We grew so big that the city shut us down because we were operating without a license…we were just kids, what did we know about a business other than candy sells! I went on to get a degree, work my way up the corporate ladder, start a family, and she did the same. So it’s no coincidence that when I started my company, she wanted in. She takes time off of her job as a hospital contract administrator to travel with me and do shows and events. We have grown the business together and have fun doing it.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.

My fiancé began buying me beard care products. I either did not like them, or they were too expensive to keep using. So I decided to make my own. I researched all of the possible ingredients and purchased small quantities of just about every ingredient you could think of from various vendors. Then I began to blend. Through trial and error, I developed the right consistency and fragrances that were both men and women-friendly. Friends and family loved my creations and recommended I produce and sell them. So I create spreadsheets with all my recipes and began production. My sister joined the team and we started selling at farmers’ markets and eventually expanded to trade shows. We make all of our products in-house. We don’t mass produce or use a third-party private labeling company just to get our products on the shelf. We use exact measurements for each ingredient and carefully blend them to give you the same product with every purchase. Our products are produced in small batches for perfect quality control. And…we add a little heart and soul to each and every product at no charge!

We use only the highest-quality ingredients that we source from reliable vendors. We don’t cut corners to save a few cents…our ingredients are top-shelf! We make sure all of our ingredients are Certified Natural. We make sure our vendors do not test on animals. We make sure our vendors meet all product and consumer safety guidelines. The ingredients we use in our products are an expression of the value we place on our customers!
