We were lucky to catch up with Theresa Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.

Theresa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?

I take vacations all the time. That is the main reason why I wanted to be my own boss and join this industry. I became a PMU artist so that I have the freedom to decide my work schedule and hours. I have the freedom to take vacations whenever I want and as often as I want. My goal in life is to create memories with my loved ones. I believe that we all should have a work life balance and destress when we need to. When we’re overwhelmed and overworked, we don’t give our best work. As a PMU artist, we need to feel our best and give 100% because this is a tattoo on someone’s face. So when you’re feeling overwhelmed or your body is giving out, take time away to relax and recover before it becomes a problem that can’t be fixed. We become our own boss for financial freedom and to be able to take time off whenever we want right? So take advantage of it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Theresa and owner of Beauty Ink Studio. I was in the healthcare industry for over 10 years before becoming a PMU artist. While working in the healthcare industry, I always thought about becoming my own boss because I wanted to be in control of my own schedule and hours. I wanted to be able to take time off whenever I wanted and not have to ask anyone. After starting a family, I knew the path I needed to take, to become my own boss so that I can be there for my kids and my family.

After getting my own brows microbladed in 2016 and saw how life changing it was to not have to do my brows every morning, I contemplated for years if I should go down this path. Then in 2019, I took a leap and took my first ombre powder brows and lip blush class. This gave me the freedom that I always wanted and I’m able to do what I love. I’m changing people’s lives one day at a time. I help women look and feel beautiful, saving them hours of getting ready in the morning.

In addition to ombre powder brows and lip blush, I also offer Microneedling, Fibroblast, Jet Plasma, Brow Lamination/Tint, and Saline Tattoo Removal. Lash enhancement is coming soon.

To say that owning my own business is easy is an understatement. You go from working a 9-5 to working 24/7. You’re always thinking about your business, what you need to do to help it grow, how to get clients, etc. You’re your own admin and have to do everything yourself. It is hard work, so don’t think it is easy money.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

I built my audience on Instagram organically. I built my client by being myself and showing up. You need to be consistent whether it’s posting, being online, showing your face, posting on stories, etc, you need to be consistent. You also need to post nice, bright and good quality work to showcase what services you provide. It can be before/after pictures, after pictures, BTS, progress photos, or your setup. Show what you can do for your clients, help them trust you, and answer FAQs. Build your audience by showing them you care and showing them how you can solve all their problems.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

The best way is by word of mouth. When you first start, do a model call, do brows free of charge and from there, your clients will refer other people to you. Another way is to tell all your friends and family, tell them to tell everyone. Word of mouth and referrals have been the best way for me to get clients.
