Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to The Runout. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
The, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
After a wonderful gig at the SC Coast in spring of 2023 (hired by Building Anglers to play for the Cobia Fly Invitational), Kelley and Jeff met a wonderful new fan.
After drinks and conversation, he asked if we eat meat, traded information, and promised pork chops….Like the best he’s ever had.
Playing music just seems to keep putting a person in places where interesting things happen.
Sure enough. 2 weeks later, a box of 12 double-bone pork chops, the thiccc ones, came to our address packed on dry ice.
What a gift! The giver will remain anonymous, but that gesture meant so much to us and helped us have some great times with friends over good eats.
The, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Runout is an alt-americana band from Columbia SC. We formed in 2019 from different pockets of the Columbia music scene. Some of us recluse singer-songwriters with our own projects, some of us studio musicians and live performers. We all found a new sound for ourselves in The Runout, and a place we can eat together, make music together, and continuously search for that magic that music can provide.
The Band is:
Moses Andrews III – bass, keys, bgvs
Kelley Gregory – bgvs
Chris Compton – electric, bgvs
Mike Scarboro – drums, bgvs
Jeff Gregory – acoustic, harmonica
“Whether it is with the full band lineup of The Runout or in a simple acoustic duo set with his wife Kelley, Jeff Gregory’s songs are the stars of a show that encompasses heartfelt storytelling mixed with evocative imagery, atop an engaging hybrid of rock, country, and folk played by a group of fantastic musicians” – Kevin Oliver/Jasper Magazine
As of spring 2023, we have 2 full length studio albums, and 3 singles that are available on all platforms for download and streaming. They are our heart’s work and the songs tell our story.
Our brag bag of performances includes local festivals such as LoCo Craft Beer Jam, Rock 4 Habitat, Crawfish Fest, Newberry Live, City Roots Mardi Gras, Tasty Tomato Fest, and Cottontown Art Crawl.
Also this past spring, our core group was the backing band for Admiral Radio as they opened for Judah & The Lion at the Senate.
Our songwriting has been more collective as of late with our recent single Too Little Too Late. Our recording has leaned more DIY, and we have been booking bigger shows. We like where this direction is pointing and we grateful for our friends, family, and fans who have supported us along the way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think the goal of staying connected as friends, and playing as much music as possible with each other is our main driving force.
The days when the food is good, the drinks are flowing, and the music is at the heart of it are some of the best days.
When there are smiling faces enjoying the vibe along with us and singing along, it makes it something truly special.
That feeling is at the root of our decisions-making when we write, record, book shows, perform live, and even develop our merch.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Moses will lock eyes with you while he’s playing. Kelley and Jeff do it when we’re in a duo or full band setting…all of us really. It’s an ineffable thing. You’ll lock eyes with someone in the crowd, too. It’s a recognition of a moment in time that we all shared in. It’s much more than that too.
That aspect of being active in creating, as well as active in sharing a musical moment is something else for sure and it feels so rewarding. When it’s centered on a musical run of bass notes, or a super tight harmony, a sick guitar line, or a powerful drum fill, then it even feels like a moment youthful excitement that fills you up and gives you life.
