We caught up with the brilliant and insightful The New Black Collective a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, The New Black Collective thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Yes! At The New Black Collective we are intentional with whom we serve. After growing up in underserved communities and attending public schooling, we made a vow to help in those places. Servicing minority communities was natural for us because we relate and want to make those communities better.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The New Black Collective is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to empowering the community through financial literacy, education beyond the classroom, and political awareness. Our mission is to promote culture and education in our community by providing access to sustainable services, investments, and opportunities. We strive to improve the quality of life for all members of our community by implementing initiatives that support education and empower individuals with economic knowledge. By partnering with local organizations and businesses, we aim to create a better future for our community and pave the way for generations to come.
Our story begins in the living room of one of our founders. Many people leave home and forget that there are still spaces that need to be filled to make their hometowns better, not the founders of The New Black Collective. After several meetings about how growing up was and how it could have been better the organization was born.
To date we are most proud of the network we’ve built with like minded groups and individuals to make our hometown a better place through serving.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
This is our favorite question! Our four cofounders met at ninth grade fish camp (freshmen orientation). We have a friendship spanning almost 20 years.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There is not one story in particular but sometimes things don’t go as planned. Sometimes we don’t know all we should know. Sometimes we have to go back to the drawing table. All of these things test your character. Resiliency comes in your ability to pivot and keep going.
