We were lucky to catch up with The Bennett Brothers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi The Bennett Brothers, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Our drummer Cody and lead singer Auston met in college at Clemson in the beginning of 2021. One night Auston was playing guitar for a group of friends at a pier on the lake and Cody showed up with another group of friends and asked to play his guitar. From there, Cody played his cajon, (box drum), with Auston at a few parties for people and the connection was obvious. Auston had already began to get a few solo gigs with our lead guitarist and his brother Candler. On March 18th 2021, Auston, Candler, and Cody played their first show at Louie’s Bar and Grill in Anderson. The show went well, although Cody was only playing a box drum at the time. They then began to play a few shows at TD’s at the pier, now Tylers Pub at the pier, and eventually Cody bought his first drumset in pursuit of being a band. One night, the owner of Study Hall in Clemson came by a show at TD’s at the pier and offered a gig at Study Hall. This was the start of our band. Later on, we realized we needed a bass player to breakout of our three piece band and add more sound but we were hesitant due to splitting the money. However, it was the best investment we could’ve made. Our bass player Carlos joined us and added so much to our sound that we were able to play more genres and figured out the direction we wanted to go in. Once Carlos joined and we became a 4 piece band, things began to fall into place and we began to create a digital footprint on social media and receive more gigs. Now we are creating more originals and putting more music out to move out of our cover band phase.
The Bennett Brothers, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are a 4 piece southern rock band located in Piedmont South Carolina with a passion for creating new and unique music. I think the biggest thing that sets us apart from other bands is how dedicated we are to sticking with our roots and playing the music that we find fit for our image. We have taken it upon ourselves to begin making a lot of merchandise and selling them at our shows for our fans. Another big thing that we have focused on is becoming entertainers. In the beginning we focus on our music, now we are focusing on being entertaining on stage and through social media. We have created a YouTube channel to capture our shows through vlogs and have even created a podcast that has connected us with multiple other artists and bands. We have a huge focus on spreading love through our journey and we want to not only be a band, but also be a platform for other artists to get their name heard. Every dollar that we make in tips/merchandise is reinvested into recording music with Studio 101.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Throughout 3 years of us playing, we have begun to build a dedicated fan base. One of the most rewarding aspects to us is the support that we have from the community. When we play shows and see people singing our original music, it gives us a boost of confidence that this is what we are supposed to be doing. Another rewarding aspect is when people share our music and posts on social media to their friends because it really helps us build our fan base. Lastly, one of the biggest rewarding aspects we have had, is the connections and friends we have made on their journey. It is so special for us to be as close to some of the other local bands and artist around the area as we are.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think the biggest thing society can do to best support artists is to engage with them on social media platforms. Social media is what currently drives the market for bands and artists and without engagement, venues don’t know wether you have an actual good following. For example, we have around 1300 followers on instagram and the most likes we have received on a post is around 200. The means that 1100 of our followers saw our post, but chose not to engage with us. That is the trickiest thing with social media, no matter how big your following is, if your post are ‘engaging enough’ then it is almost pointless to post. However, we are support greatful for the support that we have espeically since we started our social media footprint 2 years ago.
