Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tessa Lee-Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tessa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I have always provided child care as a side business since 2011. However in 2022, after being laid off from my sales position, I decided to take a risk and bet on myself! I decided to take my care business and operate it fully as my main source of income. It was no easy feat, but in order to have more control of my time and no longer work doing something that didn’t leave me fulfilled nor happy, I took the rest. It is the the best decision I ever made. Running your own business is never easy, but I make it look good. There are so many unpaid hours when you are building up from the grown, especially when it is a one women shop! I would not trade the work I do, the people whose lives have become intertwined with mine, nor the opportunities that taking this risk has led me to. I love it here, best thing I have ever did for myself!
Tessa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tessa. I am many things, creative, passionate, nurturing, a trailblazer, an entrepreneur ,a daughter, a sister, a friend. I am girls girl, a women’s women! I have always had an eye, I could see a problem a mile away, but could always find a solution. From a young girl I have always been family oriented and loved people. It was natural for me to combine the things that mattered the most and that is how Warrior Womban Wellness (WWW) was created.
Growing up around women in the health field is what led me to admire the noble career. I graduated with a BS in Health and Nutrition Sciences in 2017, with the intention of becoming an Registered Dietician. But upon graduating, I no longer wanted to help people in a passive manner. I wanted to be more hands on and tackle a different pubic health matter, Maternal Health and the transition into motherhood.
WWW provides tools and resources to nurture the wellbeing of women and mothers of all lifestyles.
Warrior Womban provides full spectrum doula services including fertility, labor, postpartum and lactation support for all women and families.
We even offer services such as childcare, dogwalker, personal assistant and many more.
WWW was created to empower, educate and support Womban along their journey of Motherhood. To alleviate some of lives daily obligations and make time for the moments that are most important. We value the importance of community and we know that every Warrior Womban needs a village.
What sets me apart from other business/services alike is my dedication to the cause, my corporate background that make business savvy and resourceful, my youth which keeps me in the know and help with a diverse range of communities and ages, my eagerness to help not only to the best of my knowledge, but also to the best of the families needs.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being personable plays a huge part in being successful in this field. I spend time in peoples most intimate space, their home. I am handling their most prized possession, their offspring. Knowing how to connect and communicate with parents at a vulnerable moment like this when they are letting a total stranger provide care to their loved one is a big deal. For some it induces fear and feelings of anxiety. by being able to connect with families, I am able to gain their trust and connect them with a level other than being a parent.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I have never been so sure of any other decision in my life than the one to work in the health field as a doula and a caregiver.
