We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terry Whitworth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terry, appreciate you joining us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of being a service provider is the kind of crazy stuff that happens from time to time. It could be anything from a disgruntled client attacking an employee or waking up to find out a celebrity gave you a shoutout on TikTok – the sudden, unexpected hits (both positive and negative) make the profession both exhilarating and exhausting. Can you share one of your craziest stories?
At my family childcare business, Kids Cabin, we had a new child who was having a very difficult time adjusting. For the first two weeks, he was crying at every drop-off and refusing to engage with the other kids.
My goal was to help him feel safe and part of the group while also reassuring his parents, who were understandably becoming very stressed.
I decided to create a personalized ‘settling-in’ plan. I sat down with the parents to learn about his favorite home comforts and then dedicated 15 minutes of one-on-one time to him each morning, focusing on those interests. I also started sending the parents midday photo updates to show him playing calmly.
Within a month, he was running into the classroom without looking back. The parents told me that the extra communication saved their experience with us, and they ended up referring two other families to Kids Cabin.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The Foundation: My journey began with Kids Cabin LLC, a family childcare home built on the belief that every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment to grow.
What started as a dedicated childcare service in North Carolina evolved into a lifestyle brand when I realized I could support not just the children, but the mothers and women in my community as well.
Kids Cabin is a high-quality family childcare and a specialized Summer Enrichment Program. Empowerment tools include a line of planners and journals, including my signature journal, “Minding My Business.” It was originally created as a self-care gift for the mothers in my childcare home to help them organize their finances, goals, and professional plans.
I recently authored my first children’s book, A Shape-Filled Adventure, which turned my “circle time” lessons into an inclusive, real-world learning experience for kids everywhere.
I don’t just “watch” children; I provide tools for the whole family’s success. My journals help women manage the mental load of home and professional life, while my childcare program focus on kindergarten readiness.
Purpose-Driven Profit: A unique aspect of my brand is that a significant portion of the proceeds from my Amazon sales and pop-up shops goes directly back into my family childcare home, specifically funding our summer programs to ensure local children have enriched experiences.
Community Impact: I am most proud of how Kids Cabin has expanded from a local service to a brand that reaches people through Amazon, conferences, and community events.
The Mission: I want potential clients to know that every book, journal, and planner is crafted with the same care I give the children in my home. My work is about helping people “mind their business” in the best way possible—by being organized, goal-oriented, and inspired.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
At Kids Cabin, even as a small family childcare business, the E-Myth philosophy has been our secret weapon for staying organized and inspired. It helped me realize that even in a childhood venture, there’s a big difference between just doing the daily chores and actually building a brand. By focusing on working on the business rather than just in it, I’ve been able to create simple systems that keep our operations smooth and professional. This entrepreneurial mindset has turned our little cabin into more than just a hobby—it’s a living example of how clear vision and a bit of structure can make even the smallest business feel like a world-class success.”

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a reputation for Kids Cabin has been a journey of blending professional childcare standards with the warmth of a true family home. Our standing in the community is rooted in unwavering trust and transparency, but what truly sets us apart is our deep-rooted community involvement. Whether we are working with veterans, hospice, participating in neighborhood food drives, or cancer awareness events, we strive to be more than just a service; we are a neighborhood anchor. By fostering these meaningful local connections and maintaining an open-door policy with our families, we’ve created a “cabin” culture where every child feels seen and every parent feels like a partner in their child’s growth.
