We recently connected with Teri Page and have shared our conversation below.
Teri, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Vacations are essential for my well-being, and for the success of my business and balance of life! However, they can be very challenging to arrange, particularly as someone who lives off the grid and cares for chickens and a large garden.
Fortunately, we have created strong networks with neighbors and friends and are always willing to help them out when they would like to get away. This, in turn, has created a wheel of reciprocity and generosity that allows us to rely on their assistance when we plan a trip away from the homestead.
Business-wise, I rely on the usual systems: Advance scheduling, automatic email sequences, social media scheduling (as needed). I am also comfortable spending 5 minutes/day while on vacation reviewing and deleting emails. Most items can simply wait a week!
Taking a vacation is a great test of the resiliency of your business. Time away from your business also creates a lot of perspective! My experience is that I always come back from a vacation with the energy and desire to dig back in!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the creator and writer of Homestead-Honey.com, and the author of several books, including Family Homesteading. I began Homestead-Honey in 2012, when I was living with my husband and two young children on a homestead in Oregon. While the website began as a passion project, it quickly expanded into a popular blog and business that has included website and eBook publication, coaching and consultancy, brand partnerships, and more!
Over the years I have documented our off the grid lifestyle and shared resources, education, and inspiration to help others on their homesteading journey. Homestead-Honey.com is particularly unique because it showcases decades of lived homesteading experience. Our family has twice started off the grid homesteads from scratch -once in Missouri, once in Vermont – and this depth of DIY experience, knowledge, and content is what sets my business and brand apart.
Homestead-Honey has always been, and will always be a place where you can find practical information, radical inspiration, and authentic communication. Homesteading is my passion and my lifestyle, and I want to uplift and encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing the homesteading path!

Have you ever had to pivot?
Homestead-Honey began just months before we packed up our entire 35 acre homestead rental and moved to a bare patch of land in rural Missouri to begin the process of building a house and homestead from scratch. It has continued through another major life pivot: when we left our Missouri homestead after 6 years, and moved to Vermont to create another off the grid home on raw land. In essence, the story of Homestead-Honey is the story of pivoting.
Each of these major life pivots was not without expense, stress, and a small amount of drama! But starting over offers a unique opportunity to learn from the mistakes and wins of the past. Each time we began anew, it was with a clear vision for our home, life, and family.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I have always tried to approach Homestead-Honey.com with authenticity and humility. I write to offer education and inspiration, but I have never assumed that my way of gardening/homesteading/preserving, etc. is the only way, or the right way. I think a focus on sharing my lived experience as an off the grid homesteader has built my reputation within the homesteading content creation market.
