We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tenia Pero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tenia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Listen. I would definitely have to say the biggest risk I have taken is quitting a 9-5 job and working mainly for myself. It’s a bit hard and challenging at times but there’s a reward at the end. Now, to be completely real I’m not at the end. The end for me would be to have a business that runs itself ( me not being there everyday.) One day I just looked around at the environment I was in. Not to knock anybody at all because I have been in almost every job you can think of. I said to myself “Is this what you really want to be doing the rest of your life?” The answer came quickly “NO” I wasn’t happy there and I wasn’t doing what I love to do, which is write and direct movies and own a movie production company. The next couple of weeks at my job I sat and thought of a master plan. I wrote out goals that I wanted to accomplish that month, in six months and within that year. Guess what? I only succeeded with two of those goals that year but the point is I kept going. You have to keep going no matter what obstacles come your way if you want to see progress at any point in your life, and I make sure to keep that in mind to this day no matter what comes my way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
This journey began with my youngest daughter Diamine. When she was around the age of seven I put her into acting classes and modeling. This was something I always wanted to do when I was a child but never really got into it like her. As the years went by watching her in front of the screen my interest sparked back up. I started doing a lot of background work, then eventually got burnt out on that. One day I was at a stop light and someone drove around me and yelled a racist remark at the car in front of me. That same day I went home and started on the first script I ever wrote which is “Stone Heart” From there I started writing scripts for other people. which inspired the creation of my own production company “PeroProduction Studios” I can say It’s a wonderful feeling to work with such an amazing talented crew.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner Turquoise Glenn is my sister. She is the perfect add on to my company. She helps me find potential leads and brings in clients for us. At one point I was attempting to do all of this by myself until one day she offered her assistance. She has been a true blessing in helping my dream come to life. We are forever greatful for her.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’m someone who loves to get involved with everything I possibly can. If there’s an event I can attend I’’m there no matter how big or small. That’s essentially how you build a reputation in society period. You have to show up, be respectful and if your there to work, put out the best version of your work you possibly can. In writing scripts or directing films or whatever I’m involved in. I won’t give or put out anything that’s not in my opinion 100%
