We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Lee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with the idea for my baking business while I was in college at Delaware State University. At the time, I was baking casually in my student housing and bringing whatever I made—cookies, cupcakes, or mini cakes—to the student organizations I was involved in. One day, a friend suggested that I turn my passion into a business and even helped come up with the name.
I was one of only two bakers on campus, and I began baking for everything from campus events to individuals who had never even had a birthday cake before. After graduating, I continued building and growing my business—and now, eight years later, I’m still thriving.
Baking has taught me patience and strong communication skills, and it has reinforced the belief that practice truly makes perfect—lessons I carry with me in all of my other endeavors.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started baking at a young age with my mom. Even if it was just making cakes from a box, the passion for baking was always there. As I grew older, I learned that baking runs in my family—my great-grandfather was a baker, and my aunt also loves to bake—so it truly feels embedded in who I am.
My specialty is cakes and cupcakes, and I’m known for my intricate, detailed designs and abstract style. What I love most about my business is the joy it brings to others. There’s nothing better than seeing someone smile when they see their cake, especially knowing it’s for a special birthday or meaningful celebration. I take pride in bringing my clients’ ideas to life, and often elevating them beyond the inspiration photo they share because, I understand that the cake is often the centerpiece of the moment.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I always keep the interpersonal communication alive in my business. I make sure I text or call clients with my personal number so they make sure I’m real and I understand their order, and trust me.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first started out, there were many moments when I felt overwhelmed—especially when a cake didn’t turn out the way I envisioned. I remember when heart-shaped cakes first became popular. The first one I made wasn’t my best work, and I knew it didn’t meet my own standards.
That experience taught me an important lesson: growth takes practice. Instead of giving up, I kept working at it, making heart cakes again and again until I truly mastered the technique. Now, I can create elaborate, beautifully detailed heart cakes with confidence and ease. I’m proud to say that it’s a completely self-taught skill—one built through patience, persistence, and dedication.
