We were lucky to catch up with Tatiana Toruno recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tatiana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey in videography began with enrolling in an expensive and unsatisfactory institution, “The Connecticut School of Broadcasting”. While I learned a little about cameras, editing, and video production, the short and costly program left me feeling underwhelmed and hungry for more knowledge. I decided to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science in Film, Digital Production, and Television at a college, which was an incredible experience. While it is possible to learn videography independently, I loved being in a classroom surrounded by like-minded individuals who shared my passion for the craft.
I wouldn’t change my college experience for anything because learning a new skill requires dedication, patience, perseverance, and practice. Time and consistency are crucial when one wants to become proficient at anything. The essential skills for videography are attention to detail, creativity, finding inspiration, perseverance, tolerance, and continuous learning.
The biggest obstacle for me, initially, was financial. Pursuing videography requires money, whether to buy courses or equipment. Additionally, one may not always have gigs lined up as a beginner. To support myself, I spent a lot of time bartending, which left me with less time to practice my craft. However, I found a way to make it work, albeit slowly.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey there! I’m originally from Panama in Central America, but I moved to the US when I was very young. I’ve always been a creative person, and I remember the first time I got my hands on a VHS recording camera. It was like love at first sight!
I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs, good choices, and bad choices. But one thing that remained constant was my love for film. In 2015, I finally decided to pursue my passion and start my career in the film industry. It was incredible to be part of the creative process of making and editing a video.
In 2018, I started my own freelancing video company called “Urban Media Miami.” I worked on different projects, but I didn’t get to grow as much as I wanted to. Sadly, I had to dissolve my LLC in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic changed many people’s lives, including mine. In 2021, my fiancee and I decided to leave our lives in Miami behind and start a new life in Colorado. Fortunately, I landed a job as a Finishing video editor at Lionsgate with Starz. I also started freelancing for Tolman Media Colorado, filming weddings. Starting from scratch in a new state was challenging, but I kept working hard to build my connections.
I started my wedding video business this year called ‘Voir Videos.’ While it’s still a work in progress, I’m editing and preparing to post lots of content. I love filming and editing weddings because witnessing a genuine connection between two people is incredibly beautiful. True love, regardless of gender, is sacred, and I feel humbled and fortunate to capture the essence of that love through my camera lens, no matter where I am in the world.
I offer a range of professional videography services to meet your needs. Whether you want to create a commercial or a feature film, I have got you covered. I am experienced in various styles, including wedding filmmaking and short films. If you want to create a compelling commercial or a captivating feature film, I use my technical expertise and creative vision to turn your ideas into reality.
I’ve come a long way since my days in Panama and am excited about the future.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist or creator, one of the most fulfilling things is having the ability to express yourself and capture the beauty of the world that often goes unnoticed. It shows in your work when you’re passionate about what you do.
As creatives, we pour our hearts and souls into our craft because we want it to have meaning and to make a difference in someone’s life or the world. It’s a truly remarkable feeling to express oneself through art, and knowing that your art can bring joy and light into someone else’s life is what makes life worth living.
Life is all about connecting, sharing, and expressing ourselves; art is the ultimate form of connection and expression.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Books play a crucial role in personal development as they open up new perspectives and opportunities for growth. Personally, I am an avid reader and listener of audiobooks, which I believe are a fantastic way to absorb knowledge and insights.
In my opinion, reading is an essential life practice as it allows us to continuously learn and expand our understanding of the world. For me, books or audiobooks are a form of medicine that heal and nourish the mind and soul.
I am deeply grateful for the transformative power of books, which help us change our mindset, maintain a positive outlook, and grow stronger in life’s challenges. Physical exercise strengthens our muscles, and training our mindset through reading and learning helps us to become mentally resilient and better equipped to achieve our goals and overcome our habits.
