We recently connected with Tashia Tate and have shared our conversation below.
Tashia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I first wanted to begin a business, I had no idea what services I would provide to the public. How would I move the community forward in the part that I play? All sorts of different questions came into my mind. I proceeded to look in wards, what are my interest and how may that help anyone who has similar interests or problems I can solve? That is when I took my training from my degree in Film & Technology to fuel the business I have now created. L.A.T Entertainment, my publishing company; provides the community to tell their stories to inspire futures of a new generation. However, there were many bumps in the road regarding, scheduling, clientele, services, etc. My internships with GFA Film and a few community members inspired me to create this business full force out of realization that there are many stories not yet told that could change the nation. My love for filmmaking then fueled me to create Tate Motorsport. My motorsport business came about in a unique way. I was in between jobs, leaving from work I had just obtained and gotten into an accident that left my rim broken. I needed to buy a whole new set of wheels and in doing so it was my first modification on my car that I filmed that in turn went viral online. People loved my knowledge of vehicles and wanted to see me customize mine. I then found an interest in drifting to study and want to start my automotive career. Henceforth Tate Motorsport was born. If I hadn’t broken my rim and been in the tough spot I was in, I wouldn’t have found the courage to customize and do things my own way.

Tashia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A few things needed to be known about me are that I’m from Georgia, born and raised. I’m currently in the career field of being a car enthusiast and pro drifting athlete as well as an entrepreneur. A few businesses that I am the executive director for are L.A.T Entertainment along with Tate Motorsport. One business being about producing publishing to inspire the community to tell their stories to inspire futures of storytelling. While my motorsport business is to not only help my career in drifting but to eventually offer different branches of automotive assistance. I am most proud of the connections along with growth I have made on the way to where I’d like to be in my field of work. They’re truly bonds I will carry for the rest of my life and hoping to make new ones. What I believe sets me apart from others are sadly unfortunate circumstances. You really don’t see a lot of women, let alone Black American women dominating in either of my lines of work. I hope to break barriers for anyone after me or around my generation to dream and achieve bigger than the status quote. Any of my potential clients or partners I want them to know that I’m very true to the impossible. What may seem to be out of reach we can achieve we just have to try and put in the work. And that is what me and my team will do for you always, push the envelope while staying true to our roots.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lessons I had to unlearn is that you don’t need all the brand new high in products to start your journey. I spent two years building my equipment inventory, thinking I needed everything new. However, a gently used canon from backmarket.com would produce the same product just as a new fresh out the box. I spent a lot of wasted time trying to collect new equipment thinking because it’s new it’s THE best. Time that could have been spent working and bettering my craft. I once purchased a brand-new camera, and it broke while in use. My mentor gave me a gentle used older model that conveniently took better photos than the brand new. I knew then the bias I had about older equipment needed to be dismantled.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes of course, resources like where to file your LLC at Ecorp.com as well as to trademark any names or businesses you have at USPTO.com or even different font websites like Dafont.com to help you with branding of your businesses and merchandise. If I had these resources beforehand it definitely would have saved me some months off the calendar.
