Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamika Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tamika, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new firm – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
I started studying for my real estate license in 2020 during the Covid lockdown. I was finally able to take the real estate sales person test in August of 2021. I joined Compass Calabasas September 2021 joining a team. December 2021 right before the holidays I received a call from a woman who said she and her husband were interested in purchasing their first home and she had seen my name and picture on our company website. She also let me know she wanted to work with a woman real estate agent and also one that was African American which I thought was pretty special. I met with her and her husband in persona and we began working together. This was during the time when rates were lower but demand was high and everyone was paying $20-100k over asking price. At times we were getting outbid by cash buyers and my clients were starting to think maybe purchasing a home in Los Angeles was unattainable. I kept telling them not be discouraged and we will find the perch home for them. We pivoted our search and decided to go with a new construction home, no bidding wars, rate locks and within my clients price range. By April 2022 I found my clients the perfect new construction home still in Los Angeles county and within the price range and they get to literally build their home from scratch. The building process took almost a year because of delays with materials during Covid but by February 2023 I was handing my clients the keys to their new home along with their welcome home basket that I curated for them. It was the best feeling in the world. Now my clients and I keep in touch and I’m planning on hanging out with them within the next few weeks.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was originally born in Allentown Pennsylvania and I moved to California when I was six years old. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. I got into the real estate business after I was laid off during Covid, I took the downtime we had during lockdown to study and set myself for a new career in real estate. I pride myself on caring for my clients and not just being worried about the check. Purchasing a home is one of the biggest purchases in someone’s life and I want to make that process as smooth and seamless as possible. As an agent I’m always working for my clients, I have even worked from my hospital before to make sure I got the job done for my clients. Each client has a specific situation and I make sure to cater to my clients specific needs. Whether you’re a first time home buyer, investor, or a seasoned home buyer I will also go above and beyond for you.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my clients and foster brand loyalty by texting my clients and checking on them. I see how they are doing in life and I also check in to see how their home is and how they are enjoying it. I also send them personalized cards during holidays and build a real genuine connection with my clients.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients are referrals from previous clients. When your previous clients can attest to your work ethic and their experience with you and recommend other people to you that’s the best. When you get referrals the new client already has an established trust with your previous clients so they already go into the working relationship with an open mind and good reference about you from your previous clients.
