We recently connected with Tamara Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Tamara, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am happy as an artist/creative! I know what it’s like to be self-employed as well as working a regular job while doing your craft on the side. Most of us are exhausted from our regular jobs and feel guilty when we want to rest because of feeling like our business, our craft is neglected. Becoming a full-time artist/creative is my goal for this year and I will make that happen!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since I was a child, I have loved art. Seeing my Dad draw and sketch things all the time made me interested in creating. I remember always running to my Dad to help me with any homework/project that included drawing, coloring, or painting. I love combining colors, I could always find something and repurpose it or make something from scratch. Growing into my adult years, I was painting and creating more because of the peaceful experience. It came to be my form of therapy. I love that my works are truly one of a kind and made from the heart. I don’t create for demand, I create when I feel. I like that I can take my time with everything that I make. The right people will see my work at the right time. I want potential clients to know that they are receiving handmade one of a kind work that has love and joy poured into it.
My most popular items are handmade ceramic coasters, resin figurines, earrings, and end tables. I always get complimented on the style and colors of my ceramic coasters at events and I love when someone welcomes my art into their space. The uniqueness of my crafts sets me apart. Having only been creating consistently for the past two years, I have a lot to learn and I’m looking forward to growing as an artist.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the freedom of expression. I feel that there is no wrong or right in art. It’s truly up to the artist because it’s an individual expression. Yes, there are accepted techniques in different forms of art but there is no one right way to be an artist.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! I love reading self-help/self-advancement material. One of my go-to books is The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It helps you transform your life and helps you overcome any artistic blocks which are usually fueled by fear, limiting beliefs, guilt, sabotage, and jealousy. When I first started out as an artist I found myself overthinking everything I wanted to create. I was afraid that it wouldn’t be liked by anyone. I frequented museums and later realized that we can stand in front of a work of art and have two different conclusions about it. That’s the power of art. I let go of fear and just started to create!
