We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tahira DeVine-Nimmons a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tahira, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today

When I saw this question I knew I had to answer it because as a coach it is my job to help you avoid mistakes I’ve made in the past and honestly just what I am about to tell you will set you up for success after that the ball is in your court .

When I started WIFE. MOTHER. DIVA® in 2019 I didn’t have my LLC ( Formal Business structure) . I was just like many who thought they didn’t need one and it could wait. Even after learning that I didn’t have to pay a professional hundreds of dollars to file it for me ( aka Legal Zoom) I still didn’t do it. I kept spending the money on things I didn’t need or thought I needed at the time.

It wasn’t until March 2020 ( beginning of a pandemic that I filed for my LLC and during that time my information got lost due to the craziness that was taking place at the time . So June 2020 is when I finally filed again and received my LLC.

You see, waiting over a year to get my LLC for a business I already started set me behind further than I could have imagined because instead of having an almost 2 year business in June of 2020 I had a brand new business that I couldn’t leverage to get funded.

Instead if using my own money to grow my business I could have been using the banks and that would have allowed me time and money to invest in the marketing and foundation of my business without pulling from my personal funds or profits,

You see revenue is great but combined with funding can help you grow your business faster! That is exactly what happened A year Later November 2021 when I accessed my first piece of funding for WIFE. MOTHER. DIVA® and when I say we have been able to grow! It is because we had the funds to invest in the right marketing strategies for our business.

You do not need to be making 6 figures in your business to access funding but you do need your LLC.

I love to answer this question because I’m often amazed how God’s plan works. Empowering women has always been the core of who I am. As an older sister, daughter and makeup artist for over 9 years making women feel like they can take on the world was my foundation. One day during the pandemic I was collaborating with one of my DIVAS “Shuling” is her name on my very first women empowerment event ” Meet the DIVA ” and she asked me if I could help her set up her business correctly. She stated she had asked many people to help her and no one would help even the ones she offered to pay. After she said that to me so many others said the exact same thing. I then knew exactly what WIFE. MOTHER.DIVA® was called to do and that was to empower women through business.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Building a Brand requires showing up before you even build the business. I was able to build my audience based on the trust I’ve built based on who I am as a person. A lot of new or inspiring business owners are on social media with private pages leaving 0 room for people to buy into them. Then when they create a business and no one is buying they can understand why. People buy from those who they LIKE, KNOW & TRUST . You have to show up before you start a business. I’ve grown my business social media page from 600 DIVAS to almost 10,000 in 1 year By showing up, focusing on my audience experience and interaction with me and creating a marketing strategy that focuses on value not sales.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?

Whew ! In the beginning I invested heavily in my business without knowing how to make money ! I was trying to sell to everyone a million products and my messaging wasn’t clear. That right there is a key to destruction for your business. I stopped selling to my audience and focused on learning who they were/ who I wanted them to be and how I could help them and make the buying process much simpler for them. During this time I paid my assistant out of my personal money. The Business wasn’t making any money but the Brand was still being built and she was and still is an essential part of that .
