We were lucky to catch up with T.d. Flenaugh recently and have shared our conversation below.
T.D., thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
I began the Falling for Learning Collective based on the need of parents and educators across Pre kindergarten – 12th grade. As an educator for over two decades, I have worked in elementary, middle, and high school. I noticed how children became disillusioned with school as they got older. It is true that education becomes increasingly important in children’s lives, but we were collectively implementing tasks and activities that led to children hating writing and reading. I also understood that many parents were choosing to do homeschooling. So I know that many parents need support in identifying student needs and sustaining an effective learning program. My podcast is a direct response to the growing need of educators and homeschooling families.

T.D., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
T.D. Flenaugh is a National Board Certified teacher and the host of the Falling for Learning Podcast. She grew up teaching others to read since she was 9 years old, starting with her sister and spreading to children in her community through her family’s tutoring program. Fowler has been teaching elementary, middle, and high school for two decades. As a teacher consultant, Fowler developed curriculum and courses for the Los Angeles Unified School District, San Bernardino City Unified School District, University of California Los Angeles, and other educational institutions.
Spurred by her journey as a mother and stand-in mother for family members combined with her education experience, Flenaugh wrote The R.E.W.R.I.T.E Method and The R.E.W.R.I.T.E Method Workbook to address the gaps in writing instruction. She knows that fun is the missing ingredient to academic achievement. When children have fun learning, they fall in love with learning.
As the first college graduate in her family and a fourth generation teen mother, she has a unique approach to professional development that leads with the heart and is solidified through empathy. Her parent child writing workshops have the power to re-energize family learning experiences.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn my perfectionism. For years, I wanted to buy a book and start and a social media presence. I learned that perfectionism is procrastination and fear. So I now have 88 episodes of my podcast. I put an episode out every week. Sometimes it comes out later than 5 p.m. on Saturday. But it comes out every week. I know that waiting prevents others from benefitting from my message and the message that my guests have to share. Many people need support with their children.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My social media presence comes from a few viral posts on instagram. I had a post on on how I learned from Beyonce on how to build generational wealth. I also had a funny post of my uncle after I had an accident. Trying a variety of posts and being consistent leads to a growing social media presence. Consistency, consistency, consistency. I just started on social media – posting consistently less than two years ago.
